NINETY-SIX SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) have announced that 96 high schools throughout the state qualified to receive the second annual IHSAA/ICJI Sportsmanship Award for the 2004-05 school year. The winning schools were selected from a total of 398 high schools that participated in the sportsmanship program last year. Winning schools were determined by their compliance with IHSAA and ICJI program requirements.

The total of 96 recipients this year is a 37% increase from the 70 schools who qualified for the inaugural IHSAA/ICJI Sportsmanship Award in 2003-04.

Thirty schools have earned sportsmanship awards in both years of the program. The two-time winners are Cannelton, Castle, Clay City, Crawford County, Crothersville, Daleville, Evansville Day, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Franklin County, Hauser, Henryville, Howe Military, Kouts, Lanesville, Linton-Stockton, Loogootee, Madison-Grant, Morton Memorial, North Daviess, North Harrison, North Judson-San Pierre, North Posey, North Vermillion, Orleans, Rising Sun, South Knox, Southern Wells, West Lafayette and Winchester.

“Our goals at the IHSAA have never focused on developing ‘All-Americans,’ but rather good Americans,” said Blake Ress, Commissioner of the IHSAA. “This sportsmanship program promotes that concept by recognizing schools whose coaches and student-athletes have exhibited a positive attitude, been good citizens and promoted fair play. In essence, this is what good healthy competition is all about.”

Each qualifying school will receive a commemorative 2004-05 IHSAA Sportsmanship Award banner to hang in its gymnasium. The four-color, 4 x 7 foot banner will be personalized and presented during a special banner ceremony. The banner serves as a visual reminder for every student-athlete, coach and fan about the importance of good sportsmanship.

In order to be eligible for the award, schools are required to have a written sportsmanship plan in place and a method for sharing that plan with faculty, coaches, parents, fans and student-athletes. Schools cannot have any players or coaches ejected from a game and cannot be on probation or suspension by the IHSAA due to a rules violation.

In a recent survey, Indiana high school principals listed sportsmanship as the number one concern in high school athletics. To address the important issue the IHSAA and ICJI partnered to develop a sportsmanship program. The IHSAA and ICJI introduced the program to Indiana high schools during the 2003-04 school year. All IHSAA-member high schools are eligible and encouraged to participate in the sportsmanship program.

“Sportsmanship is a key component of high school athletics,” added Ress. “Partnering with ICJI enables sportsmanship education and awareness efforts in Indiana to soar and helps us provide a recognition program unlike any other in the country.”

The IHSAA will consult with all high school principals and officials at the end of this school year to confirm compliance with program requirements and determine the 2005-06 winning schools. For more information on the program and the IHSAA’s involvement, visit www.ihsaa.org.

MARY RAY RETIRING AS IHSAA BOOKKEEPER

After 16 years as the IHSAA’s bookkeeper, Mary Ray announced her retirement to the office staff last week. Ray’s last day will be Thursday, Dec. 22 to coincide with the holiday break.

Ray was hired as a part-time worker in the fall of 1989 and joined on a full-time basis in January of 1990. In her role among other responsibilities, Ray collected, maintained and issued financial reports for each level of all 20 IHSAA state tournaments. She has worked under three different commissioners.

“It’s really been fun,” Ray said of her time at the IHSAA. “I’ve been lucky to do something I love and I’ll miss the people here.”

With some extra time on her hands, Ray plans to volunteer her time working with children and hopes to spend more time at her Florida vacation home.

Ray is a 1960 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School. She and her husband, Willie, have four children and 10 grandchildren and reside in Indianapolis.
