SATURDAY WRESTLING SECTIONALS SIGNAL START OF WINTER TOURNAMENTS

A total of 309 schools will be represented as sectional competition gets underway Saturday at 32 sites around the state in the 69th Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Tournament Series. This is the first event of the winter sports tournament season.

The top four contestants in each of the 14 weight classes at the sectionals will advance to one of 16 individual regionals on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Four returning state champions, two from Mishawaka, are expected to compete on Saturday and each in a different class from last year state championship season.

·    Josh Harper, Mishawaka, sophomore, competing in the 112 class at Mishawaka Sectional; Harper won the 103 state title in 2006.

·    Eric McGill, Munster, senior, competing in the 140 class at East Chicago Central; McGill won the 125 state crown in 2006.

·    Andrew Howe, Hanover Central, junior, competing in the 152 class at Crown Point; Howe won the 140 championship in 2006.

·    Ian Hinton, Mishawaka, senior, competing in the 189 class at Mishawaka; Hinton won the 171 title in 2006.

While competing as individuals, participants also will be accumulating points for their school on Saturday as the top two schools at the end of the day will advance all of their wrestlers in each weight class into the separate team tournament. That tournament, in its 12th year, is designed to determine the best team in dual competition and begins with regionals on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 16 locations. Pairings for that tournament were announced last Thursday.

As a friendly reminder, the IHSAA does not issue media credentials to sectional, regional or semi-state competitions. In those cases, please contact the host school’s athletic department.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY RACES TO INCREASE TO 5,000 METERS

At its Jan. 18 meeting, the IHSAA Executive Committee approved increasing the distance of girls cross country races to 5,000 meters effective next fall.

Since 1984, girls cross country races have been run at a 4,000 meter distance while boys races had been contested at 5,000 meters since 1980. Approximately 75 percent of the other states require girls to run 5,000 meters, including all states contiguous with Indiana.
