SATURDAY WRESTLING SECTIONALS SIGNAL START OF WINTER TOURNAMENTS

A total of 309 schools will be represented as sectional competition gets underway Saturday at 32 sites around the state in the 69th Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Tournament Series. This is the first event of the winter sports tournament season.

The top four contestants in each of the 14 weight classes at the sectionals will advance to one of 16 individual regionals on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Four returning state champions, two from Mishawaka, are expected to compete on Saturday and each in a different class from last year state championship season.

·    Josh Harper, Mishawaka, sophomore, competing in the 112 class at Mishawaka Sectional; Harper won the 103 state title in 2006.

·    Eric McGill, Munster, senior, competing in the 140 class at East Chicago Central; McGill won the 125 state crown in 2006.

·    Andrew Howe, Hanover Central, junior, competing in the 152 class at Crown Point; Howe won the 140 championship in 2006.

·    Ian Hinton, Mishawaka, senior, competing in the 189 class at Mishawaka; Hinton won the 171 title in 2006.

While competing as individuals, participants also will be accumulating points for their school on Saturday as the top two schools at the end of the day will advance all of their wrestlers in each weight class into the separate team tournament. That tournament, in its 12th year, is designed to determine the best team in dual competition and begins with regionals on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 16 locations. Pairings for that tournament were announced last Thursday.

As a friendly reminder, the IHSAA does not issue media credentials to sectional, regional or semi-state competitions. In those cases, please contact the host school’s athletic department.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY RACES TO INCREASE TO 5,000 METERS

At its Jan. 18 meeting, the IHSAA Executive Committee approved increasing the distance of girls cross country races to 5,000 meters effective next fall.

Since 1984, girls cross country races have been run at a 4,000 meter distance while boys races had been contested at 5,000 meters since 1980. Approximately 75 percent of the other states require girls to run 5,000 meters, including all states contiguous with Indiana.

INDIANA CONNECTIONS TO SUPER BOWL XLI

Three individuals who played high school football in Indiana – the Bears’ Rex Grossman and Brad Maynard along with the Colts’ John Standeford– will be involved in Super Bowl XLI in Miami on Sunday, February 4, while several others have connections to our state at the collegiate or professional level:

Chicago Bears

·         Rex Grossman – Starting quarterback in his fifth year; drafted in the first round out of the University of Florida (1999-02), where he was runner-up for the Heisman trophy his senior year in 2001.  Grossman led Bloomington South High School to the 1998 5A state championship by throwing five touchdowns passes in the title game, a 35-14 victory over Homestead.  As a high school quarterback, he was named the Indianapolis Star Mr. Football and Indiana Player-of-the-Year by USA Today.

·         Brad Maynard – Punter in his 11th NFL season; drafted in the third round by the New York Giants. He is now in his sixth season with Chicago. Maynard was part of Sheridan High School’s 1988 Class A state championship and was later selected to play in the Indiana North-South All-Star Football Game.  He went on to punt for Ball State (1993-96) where he was a consensus All-American selection his senior year.

Also:

·         Rob Boras – Tight Ends Coach; played at DePauw University (1988-91).  Boras was also the offensive line coach at DePauw in 1992-93.

·         Mark Levoir – Rookie offensive lineman; played at Notre Dame (2002-05).  Levoir is on the Bears practice squad.

·         Anthony Oakley –Backup offensive lineman in his 2nd year; played three years at Indiana University (1999-01).

·         Adewale Ogunleye – Starting defensive end and one of the NFL’s elite pass rushers; 7th year; starred at Indiana University (1996-99).

·         Kyle Orton – Third-string quarterback in his 2nd season; played at Purdue (2001-04). Orton was a fourth-round selection of the bears in 2005.

·        Steven Wilks – Defensive backs coach; was an assistant to Tyrone Willingham at Notre Dame in 2004.

Indianapolis Colts

·         John Standeford - Backup wide receiver; joined the Colts as a member of the practice squad in 2004 before making the active roster in 2006.  He attended Monrovia High School graduating in 2000.  As a senior at Monrovia, John caught 39 passes for 879 yards and 8 TDs…caught 63 passes for 993 yards and 12 TDs as junior…also played safety…lettered in basketball and was named an Indiana All-Star in basketball as senior.  John accepted a scholarship to play at Purdue University where he ended his career as the Big Ten’s leading receiver in receptions and yards, totaling 266 receptions for 3,788 yards and 27 TDs.

Also:

·         Rocky Boiman – Backup linebacker in his 5th year; signed as a free agent in 2006; played at Notre Dame (1998-2001).

·         Jerome Collins – Backup tight end in his 2nd season; played at Notre Dame (2001-04); currently on the Colt’s injured reserve.

·         Gilbert Gardner – Backup linebacker; 3rd year in the NFL; three-year starter at Purdue (2000-03).

·         Diron Reynolds   Defensive quality control coach in his 5th season; joined the Colts staff from Indiana University where he served in 2001 as defensive line coach for the Hoosiers.

·         Hunter Smith – Punter; 8th year; named to the 1999 NFL All-Rookie team; played at Notre Dame (1995-98); his 41.2 yard punting average was second best in school history.

BOYS BASKETBALL STATISTICS

Information as of Tuesday, January 23, 2007

The following lists of statistical leaders are compiled from information contained at Athlistics.com, the IHSAA’s exclusive athletic statistics reporting and publishing service. The IHSAA encourages each of its member schools to participate by registering for free at Athlistics.com and updating team and individual statistics by 10 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. CT each Monday through the end of the season. Subscribers to the site will be able to assist their favorite school’s athletic department as 25 percent of subscription revenue benefits the school designated by the individual.
