GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE TOURNAMENT TRAIL SET

A field of 390 teams, the most since 1984, will begin play as the 32nd Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament Series tips off next week at 64 sites around the state.

 

A majority of sites are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 6, with play continuing through the week with championship games set for Saturday, Feb. 10. The regional round is slated for Feb. 17, semi-states on February 24 and the state finals at Conseco Fieldhouse on March 3. In all, 386 games will be played over the four-week period.

 

At the state finals, there will be a championship game in each of the four classes, beginning with Class A at 10:30 am ET and followed immediately by the Class 2A game. After a mid-afternoon break, the second session will begin with the Class 3A championship game at 6 pm ET, followed by the Class 4A game.

 

Among the defending state champions, Lafayette Central Catholic will meet Carroll (Flora) in Class A, Sectional 53. In 2A, Heritage Christian will open first round play against Triton Central in Sectional 43. Fort Wayne Bishop Luers will face Leo in the first round of Class 3A’s Sectional 23, and 4A Castle will host Sectional 16 and play the winner of Evansville Central-Evansville Reitz.

 

Other top-ranked teams in this week’s state coaches poll include 4A Hamilton Southeastern which opens with Westfield in Sectional 9 at Westfield; In 3A, South Bend St. Joseph’s takes on New Prairie in Sectional 19 at New Prairie. Heritage Christian, in 2A will meet Triton Central in Sectional 43 at Speedway and; Class A’s Bloomfield drew Shakamak in Sectional 62 at Clay City.

 

Three member schools will be making their first appearance in the girls basketball state tournament including Fishers (Class 4A, Sectional 9 at Westfield), Guerin Catholic (Class 2A, Sectional 43 at Speedway) and Greenwood Christian (Class A, Sectional 57 at Southwestern of Shelbyville).

 

Shenandoah, in Class 2A, leads the state with seven consecutive sectional championships. Castle (4A) follows with six consecutive, South Bend St. Joseph’s (3A) with five and Evansville Memorial (3A), Heritage Christian (2A), Kokomo (4A), North Montgomery (2A), Northeast Dubois (A), South Central (Elizabeth) (A) and Tri-Central (A) each have won four in a row.

 

Rushville won its 24th sectional overall last year to lead the state. The Lions are followed by Bedford North Lawrence and Valparaiso with 20 each and Kokomo and NorthWood with 18 each.

5-Team Fields

Will play one first-round game on Tuesday at 7 p.m., two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Note: The team drawing the first-round bye will play the Tuesday night winner in the second semifinal game on Friday.

 

6-Team Fields

Will play two first-round games on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. (except as noted), two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Note: The two teams drawing first-round byes will play in the second semifinal game on Friday.

 

7-Team Fields

Will play one first-round game on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m., two games on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m., two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

 

8-Team Fields

Will play two first-round games on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m., two games on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m., two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

 

9-Team Fields

Will play one first round game on Monday beginning at 7 p.m., two games on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m., two games on Thursday beginning at 6 p.m., two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

 

One Sectional Will Play First-Round Games at Multiple Sites

In the East Chicago Central Sectional, the host school for the first round is determined by the draw. The second-named team in each first-round pairing will host a game with the semifinals and championship games to be played at East Chicago Central.

Admission: $5 per session; $9 all sessions.

Home Team: The second team listed in each pairing will be the designated home team.

Bye Game: The bye game in a six-team sectional will be the second game played in the semifinal round.
