GIRLS SWIMMING SECTIONALS START THURSDAY

A total of 234 schools and 3,507 participants will be involved as the 33rd Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving Tournament Series gets underway Thursday afternoon, Feb. 1, with sectional preliminary heats at 20 sites around the state. Diving prelims and semifinals start Saturday morning, Feb. 3, at each site with consolations and finals in each event scheduled for later in the day. All first place swimming event winners in each sectional will advance to the state meet along with any participant who equals or betters the state time standard in that event’s consolation or championship heat. The next fastest times in each event also will qualify in order to bring the field to 32 entrants.

The top four divers at each sectional will advance to one of four diving regionals slated for Tuesday, Feb. 6, with the top eight advancing to the state meet.

Heat sheets for the state finals and results from each sectional site will be posted to the girls swimming page on the IHSAA website on Sunday, Feb. 4, as they become available. Diving regional results will be posted on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

TEAM WRESTLING REGIONALS WEDNESDAY, INDIVIDUAL REGIONALS SATURDAY

With the start of last Saturday’s 69th Annual IHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament Series at the sectional level, the sport now breaks off into two separate tournaments. The top two teams at each of the sectionals now advance their full complement of wrestlers to regional action of the 12th Annual Team Wrestling Tournament Series at 16 sites Wednesday, Jan. 31. Following two rounds of dual competition that evening, the regional championship teams will head to semi-state competition on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Meanwhile, in the individual tournament, the top four wrestlers from Saturday’s sectionals head to regional action this Saturday at 16 various sites. The top three participants in each weight class will qualify for the individual semi-states on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Results from each site will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available.

APPLY FOR INDIVIDUAL WRESTLING STATE FINALS MEDIA CREDENTIALS

As in 2006, news media planning to cover the IHSAA Individual Wrestling State Finals on Feb. 16-17 will be required to apply for credentials. The generic state finals media credential issued earlier this year will NOT allow admission – no exceptions.

Interested media should fax a request on company letterhead to IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at 317-575-4244. Requests via e-mail will not be accepted. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Feb. 14. Please include the names of the individuals to be credentialed limiting your requests to legitimate, working members of the media. Credentials are not transferable from person to person and unauthorized usage may result in revocation of credential privileges. Also, children will not be granted credentials and should not be brought to the venue.

Approved requests may be claimed at media will-call at Conseco Fieldhouse on the days of the event. As a friendly reminder, the IHSAA does not issue credentials to sectional, regional or semi-state competitions. In those cases, please contact the host school’s athletic department.

NOTE: This policy does not affect the Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School on Saturday, Feb. 24. The generic 2006-07 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential, issued earlier this year for other state finals events, will continue to allow admission to that event as in previous years.

SCHOOLS HONORED WITH IHSAA SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced that 97 member high schools qualified to receive the third annual IHSAA Sportsmanship Award for the 2005-06 school year, including 46 who will be recognized for the first time. A total of 400 high schools participated in the sportsmanship program last school year.

In order to be eligible for the award, schools are required to have a written sportsmanship plan in place and a method for sharing that plan with faculty, coaches, parents, fans and student-athletes. Further, schools cannot have any players or coaches ejected from a game and cannot be on probation or suspension by the IHSAA due to a rules violation.

“Our goals at the IHSAA have never focused on developing ‘All-Americans,’ but rather good Americans,” said Blake Ress, Commissioner of the IHSAA. “This sportsmanship program promotes that concept by recognizing schools whose coaches and student-athletes have exhibited a positive attitude, been good citizens and promoted fair play. In essence, this is what good, healthy competition is all about.”

Each school that qualifies for the first time will receive a commemorative IHSAA Sportsmanship Award banner to hang in its gymnasium. The four-color, 4 x 7 foot banner will be personalized and presented during a special ceremony. The banner serves as a visual reminder for every student-athlete, coach and fan about the importance of good sportsmanship. Schools that have won in previous years will receive an attachment with the school year printed on it that can be added to the banner they had previously earned.

Schools that qualified for the award, including those which won for the first time listed in italics, include:

Adams Central, Angola, Attica, Austin, Batesville, Bethesda Christian, Bloomfield, Blue River Valley, Bluffton, Borden, Brownstown Central, Cannelton, Caston, Charlestown, Christian Academy of Indiana, Churubusco, Clinton Prairie, Covington, Crawford County, Crothersville, Crown Point, Culver Community, Daleville, Eastern (Pekin), Evansville Reitz, Fairfield, Floyd Central, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, Fort Wayne Canterbury, Fountain Central, Gary Wirt, Goshen, Greensburg, Hammond Clark, Hebron, Heritage, Holy Cross, Howe Military, Indiana School for the Blind, Indiana School for the Deaf, Jimtown, Kankakee Valley, Keystone, Kokomo, Kouts, LaCrosse, Lapel, Liberty Christian, Manchester, Marion Lakeview Christian, Medora, Mitchell, Monroe Central, Morton Memorial, Mount Vernon (Fortville), New Harmony, New Prairie, North Central (Farmersburg), North Daviess, North Decatur, North Judson, North Knox, North Vermillion, North White, Northeast Dubois, Northridge, Oldenburg Academy, Orleans, Owen Valley, Perry Central, Randolph Southern, Restoration Christian, Rossville, Shakamak, South Central (Elizabeth), South Decatur, Southern Wells, Southmont, Southridge, Southwestern (Hanover), Southwood, Switzerland County, Tipton, Tri-County, Triton, Tri-West Hendricks, Union (Dugger), University, Vincennes Rivet, Washington Catholic, Washington Township, West Noble, West Washington, White’s, Whitko, Winchester, Woodlan.
