FIVE RETURNING CHAMPS HEADLINE GIRLS SWIMMING STATE FINALS

Five individuals return as defending state champions in six events to headline the 33rd Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals this weekend at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Preliminary swimming heats get underway Friday night at 6 pm ET / 5 pm CT at the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI in Indianapolis. The top 16 in each event will return for competition on Saturday with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. Those finishing nine through 16 on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats. All diving will take place on Saturday beginning at 9 am ET / 8 am CT with the top 21 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each. All championship and consolation finals, including diving, will commence at 1:05 pm ET / 12:05 pm CT on Saturday.

Center Grove junior Michelle McKeehan, the two-time defending champ in both the 200 IM and the 100 Breast, returns as the top seed in both events. With a third state title in both events, she would become just the third individual to win the same two events in her first three prep seasons joining Anderson’s Debbie Daniel (1981-83) and Elkhart Central’s Lindsay Benko (1991-93).

Last year marked the first time in the tournament’s 32 years that a tie for the state title in an event occurred when Yorktown’s Kelsi Hall and Jeffersonville’s Ariel Martin touched the wall in an identical 23.54 in the 50 freestyle. Both return in the event with Hall, a junior, clocking the state’s top time last weekend while Martin, a senior, turned in the eighth best.

Chesterton’s Talor Whitaker helped Chesterton win four of the last seven events in last year’s state meet and the senior returns to the field of competitors in the 100 freestyle, the event she won a year ago. She enters the 2007 meet as the eighth seed in the event after winning last weekend’s sectional at home.

Jenny Connolly of Harrison (West Lafayette) is the final defending champ in this year’s field after winning her first title in the 100 backstroke in 2006. The junior captured the championship at last week’s Lafayette Jefferson Sectional and turned in the state’s best time at 56.41 in the process.

In the team competition, Carmel will attempt to win its 21st consecutive state championship on Saturday. With each passing year, the Greyhounds continue to move up the national charts. A first place finish this weekend would tie them for the second longest string of girls swimming titles in the country and one short of the top spot in the sport. It’s also the second longest active string of titles in the country regardless of sport.

CHARLIE ADAMS NAMED IHSAA MEDIA AWARD RECIPIENT

Charlie Adams, former sports anchor at South Bend’s WSBT TV, has been named the 2006-07 recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for District I.

Adams will be honored in a special presentation prior to the start of the Warsaw-Plymouth boys varsity basketball game in Plymouth on Thursday. IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress and members of the IHSAA Board of Directors will be on hand to make the presentation.

Adams is a native of Mississippi, where he graduated in 1980 from Lafayette County High School in Oxford. He went on to earn a degree in Education from the University of Mississippi four years later. While a student, he got his start in broadcasting working in sports at the campus television station. He went on to become Sports Director at KBAK TV in Bakersfield, Calif. where he helped create a weekly prime time show called “Hometown Sports” that focused entirely on high school sports.

In 1988, Adams became Sports Director at WSBT TV in South Bend where he covered the high school sports scene extensively and even earned the nickname “Chopper Charlie” for soaring across northern Indiana skies covering prep football games via helicopter. One of his major priorities while at WSBT was to arrange and produce the weekly Outstanding Student Athlete award which honored area athletes that excelled not only in sports, but also in academics, community service and other extracurricular activities.

In 2005 after 23 years in the business, Adams chose to devote his career to motivational speaking on a full-time basis. While his program is geared to corporate, school and church settings throughout the state of Indiana, much of it focuses on inspiring young people to believe in themselves, live life with a strong work ethic, providing service for others and to take pride in their communities.

He continues to produce a twice weekly sports piece on the evening news titled, “Charlie’s Corner” where high school sports is a frequent topic of his commentary.

Adams and his wife, Nancy, have six children: Jack 14, Karley, 13, Abby, 11, Rachel, 10, Lindsy 8, and Grace 3.

This is the 23rd year the IHSAA has recognized an outstanding member of the Indiana news media from each of the three IHSAA legislative districts for their excellence in the coverage of high school sports. District I covers 22 counties across northern Indiana. Adams is the third and final honoree of this school year joining Dick Stimpson of WNUY AM & FM in Bluffton and Tom Collins of the Evansville Courier & Press.

On behalf of its 406 member schools, the Indiana High School Athletic Association is pleased to salute Charlie Adams for his dedicated service to high school athletics in the state of Indiana.

Previous award winners from north central Indiana include:

Bill Redfield, Michigan City News-Dispatch, 1984-85

Dave Krider, LaPorte Herald-Argus, 1985-86
