NEW FOOTBALL SECTIONAL ASSIGNMENTS APPROVED

The football sectional assignments for the 2007 and 2008 seasons were approved today by the IHSAA Executive Committee at its February meeting. The tournament format was developed by the 10-person Football Realignment Committee and forwarded to the IHSAA Executive Committee for its approval.

With 317 schools playing football in Indiana, the tournament format again assigns teams to 40 sectionals within a five-class system. Of those 40 sectionals, 37 will have eight teams assigned for the state tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The remaining three sectionals will have seven teams including, Class 5A, Sectional 8; Class 4A, Sectional 16 and; Class 3A, Sectional 22.

In other action taken today by the Executive Committee, John Williams, Principal at Carmel, was approved to join the IHSAA Board of Directors following a special election conducted earlier this month for District II, Class 4A. Williams had served on the IHSAA Board from 2001 to 2003 while Principal at Evansville Harrison. He takes the seat vacated by former Carmel Assistant Principal Lee Lonzo who announced his resignation from the group at its December meeting. Williams’ term runs through June 30, 2008.
