BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND

Several first-time state champions will be crowned this weekend in the 70th Annual IHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving State Finals at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

North Central of Indianapolis is the two-time defending state champion and the Panthers claim the only individual in the meet – Mike Christy – to have won an individual state title. The senior is the defending champ in two events – the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke and enters Friday’s prelims with the state’s best time from last Saturday’s sectionals. He also won the 200 IM as a freshman in 2004.

Joining Christy as a top seed in two events is Westfield’s Ben Wachtel. Wachtel clocked the state’s top time in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. He finished fourth in last year’s 100 free final at state.

Preliminary swimming heats get underway Friday night at 6 pm ET / 5 pm CT. The top 16 in each event will return for competition on Saturday with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. Those finishing ninth through 16th on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats. All diving will take place on Saturday beginning at 9 am ET / 8 am CT with the top 21 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each. All championship and consolation finals, including diving, will commence at 1:05 pm ET / 12:05 pm CT on Saturday.

Center Grove, competing at Indian Creek, and Munster, competing at the Crown Point Sectional, each won their 22nd sectional crown in a row on Saturday – the state’s longest active streak of titles in the sport.

Results from each event will be posted to the IHSAA website as the meet progresses both days.

DOUG GARD HONORED AS TOP SWIMMING OFFICIAL

A licensed official for 11 years, McCordsville resident Doug Gard is this year’s recipient of the Interscholastic Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the sport of swimming and diving.

Doug will be honored in a special ceremony during this weekend’s state finals at IU Natatorium.

Including this season, Doug has 11 sectionals, two regionals, and four state finals to his credit.

Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of the 11 sports during the school year.

Gard was nominated for this award by Mark Friend, sports chairman of the Indiana Officials Association (IOA), one of 26 associations located throughout Indiana comprised of men and women who give up much of their personal time to assist in providing meaningful and healthy activities for the student-athletes of our state. This honor comes as a result of Gard’s selection by a committee representing those 26 associations. Statewide, there are almost 7,500 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports.

Gard went to Greenfield-Central High School, and Purdue University. He is the owner of two UPS stores in Indianapolis and Fishers.  Doug and his wife Julia have two kids: Chloe and Lucy.

BOYS BASKETBALL STATISTICS

ATTENTION BOYS BASKETBALL COACHES

Please be sure to report your final statistics of the season at Athlistics.com upon your team’s elimination from the state tournament so that your players will continue to appear in the weekly state leaders listings through the end of the state finals. The last compilation of the season will be announced the week following the state finals.

Information as of Tuesday, February 20, 2007

The following lists of statistical leaders are compiled from information contained at Athlistics.com, the IHSAA’s exclusive athletic statistics reporting and publishing service. The IHSAA encourages each of its member schools to participate by registering for free at Athlistics.com and updating team and individual statistics by 10 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. CT each Monday through the end of the season. Subscribers to the site will be able to assist their favorite school’s athletic department as 25 percent of subscription revenue benefits the school designated by the individual.
