WARREN CENTRAL EYEING ANOTHER SWEEP IN TRACK & FIELD FINALS

After winning both girls and boys state track and field team titles last year, Warren Central will attempt another sweep this weekend in Bloomington when the IHSAA hosts the 104th Boys State Finals and the 34th Girls State Finals.

The boys event will be contested Friday, June 1, while the girls will compete on Saturday, June 2. The Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University will serve as host for the fourth year.

Both Warren Central teams enter the festivities sitting atop their respective state coaches polls and if both win this year’s crown, they’ll be the first school to do so in consecutive years. The only other schools to sweep both were Gary Roosevelt in 1983 and Fort Wayne Northrop in 2004. The Warriors also have captured the last two boys cross country state titles.

Six boys, all seniors, return to defend their 2006 crowns including Greencastle’s Andy Weatherford (1600 meters) and Evansville Harrison’s Bryce Brown (300 hurdles). Both have won those particular events the last two years and will look to cap their prep careers with a third. Weatherford will look to become just the second individual to win the 1600 three times and the first since 1991 when Gary Mann’s Eric Smooth claimed his third in a row. The 300 intermediate hurdles, run in Indiana since 1999, doesn’t have quite the history so Brown will be attempting to raise the bar as no one previously had won the event more than once. Brown is also entered in the 110 hurdles, an event he finished second in last year and won as a sophomore in 2005.

On the girls side, nine individuals who proved to be the best in the state a year ago are back for more glory.

Homestead senior Katie Veith will be going for her third state championship in four years in the pole vault and will try to raise the state meet record for the fourth straight year. She cleared 13-6 at last year’s meet.

Also of note is Culver Academies distance runner Alex Banfich. Banfich returns as the winner in the 3200 race. Banfich also has won the last two girls cross country state titles.

PARK TUDOR LOOKING FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE CROWN IN GIRLS TENNIS

Four teams that have combined for a stellar 72-1 record this season, including the two-time defending state champion, make up the field for the 33rd Annual IHSAA Girls Tennis State Finals on Saturday.

Jasper will tangle with Munster in one semifinal while Homestead will go up against Park Tudor at North Central High School in Indianapolis. The semifinal matches begin at 10 am ET with the championship round set for 2 pm ET. Park Tudor defeated Munster, 3-2, in last year’s championship match, to become the first repeat winner since Evansville Memorial earned four straight from 1993-96. Another Munster-Park Tudor title tilt would be just the second time the same two teams have battled in consecutive years. Evansville Memorial bettered Homestead in 1995 and 1996.

Munster is making its 11th trip to the state finals and third in the last four years. The Mustangs have been to the championship match three times since the current format came into existence in 1982 but have had to settle for the runner-up trophy each time. Senior No. 1 player Maureen Modesto was the state singles runner-up as a freshman in 2004 and enters the day undefeated at 26-0. No. 2 singles player Mary Hill, a sophomore, also sits perfect at 26-0.

Homestead has reached the state finals for the 14th time and has advanced to the championship match six times but has been turned away each year most recently in 2004. Senior Amy Recht and sophomore Jade Johnson, the top two singles players, each have lost only once this season in 27 outings. Homestead’s only loss in dual competition this season came at the hands of Park Tudor, a 3-2 setback, on May 12.

Jasper is the lone entrant not among the 2006 foursome though the Wildcats certainly have a history in the state finals. This will be Jasper’s ninth trip to this level and first since 2003. Three times (1992, 2002, 2003) Jasper has won in the semifinal round but, like Homestead and Munster, have settled for runner-up honors each time. Jasper’s top doubles team of seniors Brooklyn Becher and Margot Eckerle are 25-1 this spring.

Park Tudor will be making its seventh trip to the state finals and hopes to add its fifth girls crown. Under the team format, the Panthers have never lost a state finals match (7-0). Coach Dave Heffern has guided Park Tudor to each championship (1998, 2000, 2005, 2006) and also owns five boys titles. On the court, Park Tudor is led by senior No. 1 singles player Megan Martzolf (20-2). Martzolf played No. 2 for last year’s championship team after winning the state singles title as a sophomore. No. 3 player Sarah McPhail is 21-0 at that position and the Panthers doubles teams are a combined 43-1 this year.

All four teams finished in the top four of the final regular season poll from the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches  Association. Park Tudor was first followed by Munster, Homestead and Jasper.

Also being contested on Saturday, albeit at a different venue is the regional round of the individual single and doubles tournament. First round action at Ben Davis High School begins at 10 am ET with second round matches at 2 pm ET. Afternoon winners will advance to next weekend’s state finals at North Central High School.
