2006 CHAMPS FLOYD CENTRAL, NOVAK RETURN TO BOYS GOLF FINALS

A total of 131 golfers representing 46 schools make up the field for the 71st Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals which begins Tuesday, June 12, at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin. Second round play concludes the following day.

Twenty-one teams advanced five golfers each and 26 have moved on without their squads. Participants will tee off the Middle 9 course and the Road 9 course beginning at 8 am ET / 7 am CT on Tuesday. Those teams and individuals that make the cut will return for a second day on Wednesday with the first group again starting at 8 am ET. The first round tee times and pairings are available here.

Nine of last year’s top 25 individuals return including three of the top five players from the 2006 final leaderboard.

Among them is the defending champion Anthony Novak of Michigan City. The senior shot a two-day total of 66-72-138 a year ago, the second-best performance ever in the state finals. He shot an 80 on Friday at Beechwood in LaPorte but helped Michigan City advance to the state finals for the fourth consecutive year. Only three individuals have ever won back-to-back state titles (Joe Campbell, Anderson, 1952, 1953; Ron Frantz, Indianapolis Broad Ripple, 1960, 1961; Jeremy Wilkinson, South Bend Clay, 1994, 1995).

Delta junior Chase Wright and Floyd Central senior Ben Engle are the other top returnees. Wright finished one shot behind Novak last year at 70-69-139, which tied for the third lowest score in state finals history. Engle, who tied for fourth, put up a 75-68-143 in helping Floyd Central with its first team championship.

The Highlanders, which won their second straight regional crown at Seymour, are one of nine teams that have advanced back to The Legends. Four of last year’s five golfers also are on the roster which should help them contend for the championship again. Bloomington South and Penn, which finished fourth and fifth last year, respectively, are the only other teams returning that advanced to the second day of the 2006 state finals.

Fans and media are invited to view the progress of the state finals by visiting www.golfstat.com. The IHSAA will post the hole-by-hole scores for every player throughout the two days.
