IHSAA SPONSORING COUNTRY’S LARGEST STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

With the goal of fostering positive traditions through citizenship and sportsmanship, the Indiana High School Athletic Association is sponsoring the Fourth Annual IHSAA Student Leadership Conference on Tuesday, June 19, at Carmel High School.

This year’s conference is set to draw a record 850 participants from 98 schools around the state making it the largest single-day student leadership conference in the country organized by a state athletic association. By comparison, the 2006 conference drew 650 students from 85 schools.

Each of the IHSAA’s 406 member schools was invited to send a team of four to eight student-athletes and an adult facilitator to the day-long conference which will include a handful of national speakers as well as over 40 different discussion sessions that the attendees may choose from.

Students-athletes will have the opportunity to meet and interact with each other while also hearing from Tom Zupancic, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Indianapolis Colts; Stephen Bargatze, an internationally-acclaimed comedian and motivational speaker and; Sherard Clinkscales, Scott McGowan and Gregory Hobbs, of Aftersport Group, an Indianapolis-based organization dedicated to preparing student-athletes for careers after sports.

“We’ve seen an increase in attendance each year we’ve sponsored this event and it’s quickly grown into the largest of its kind in the country which is an exciting development,” says Assistant Commissioner Sandy Searcy, who coordinates the Student Leadership Conference on behalf of the IHSAA. “We hope to offer the participants some useful life tools they can take away to help not only themselves but hopefully share with their classmates and their communities.”

Among the many topics included in the discussion sessions are: Leadership, Sportsmanship, College Preparation, Building Team Morale, Athletic-Related Careers, Building Winning Traditions, Mental Preparation, Balancing Athletics and Academics and IHSAA Issues and Answers.

Members of the media are welcome to attend the event and should check-in at the Registration Desk at Entrance 1 on the south side of Carmel High School. Registration is from 8:30 am to 9:30 am ET.
