TOM COLLINS TO BE HONORED WITH IHSAA MEDIA SERVICE AWARD

A sports writer since 1968, Tom Collins of the Courier & Press in Evansville, has been selected as the 2006-07 recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for District III.

Collins will be honored on Friday night in a special ceremony during the Boonville-Central football game in Evansville. IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress will be on hand along with Paul Neidig, athletic director of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, and Mike Whitten, principal at Boonville, both members of the IHSAA Board of Directors, to make the presentation.

Collins joined the Courier & Press sports department in 1968 and has covered the high school sports scene in southwestern Indiana since 1989. Prior to that he spent 21 consecutive years as the beat writer for the University of Evansville.

He was honored in 2002 with the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s Virgil Sweet Service Award which honors individuals who have provided meritorious service in the promotion of basketball in the state of Indiana.

Upon graduation, Collins joined the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a communications technician while based in Turkey and Germany. After his discharge in 1963, Collins began working at Crane Naval Depot north of Loogootee as a computer programmer. When a parent fell ill, Collins returned home and began his career with the Evansville newspaper.

He and his wife, Diana, have resided in Fort Branch for 32 years. They have two adult children, Angela Speedy and Christopher Collins and one granddaughter, Jordan. In his spare time, Collins enjoys reading books on WWII history and spending time with his granddaughter.

This is the 23rd year the IHSAA has recognized an outstanding member of the Indiana news media from each of the three IHSAA legislative districts for excellence in the coverage of high school sports. District III covers 42 counties across southern Indiana. Collins is the first honoree of the 2006-07 school year.

On behalf of its 406 member schools, the Indiana High School Athletic Association is pleased to salute Tom Collins and recognize his dedicated service to high school athletics in the state of Indiana.

STATE STATISTICAL LEADERS

Information as of Monday, October 2, 2006

The following lists of statistical leaders are compiled from information contained at Athlistics.com, the IHSAA’s exclusive athletic statistics reporting and publishing service. The IHSAA encourages each of its member schools to participate by registering for free at Athlistics.com and updating team and individual statistics by 10 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. CT each Monday through the end of the season. Subscribers to the site will be able to assist their favorite school’s athletic department as 25 percent of subscription revenue benefits the school designated by the individual.
