BOYS TENNIS STATE TITLE UP FOR GRABS SATURDAY

The 40th gathering of the IHSAA Boys Tennis State Finals will feature four teams that are no strangers to this level of the tournament.

On Saturday at 10 am EDT, Munster (21-1) will meet Park Tudor (14-3) in one semifinal while Homestead (17-3) will battle Floyd Central (16-3) in the other semifinal at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

Including this year, the foursome has made 39 trips to the state finals, but only Park Tudor has managed to walk away with the championship trophy. The Panthers have done it five times, most recently in 2002. This team, with only one senior in its starting lineup, survived a pair of 3-2 matches in the semi-state last weekend to make the school’s sixth trip to the state meet. They also won the only regular season dual meeting of the four teams – a 4-1 victory over Homestead on Aug. 25.

Munster is back for the 10th time and first since 2001 though no Mustang team has been able to get over the semifinal hurdle since the 1977 team finished as the state runner-up. This group features five seniors among its starters, four that play doubles.

Homestead ousted 2005 finalist West Lafayette in last Saturday’s semifinals and then eliminated Delta in the championship to advance to state for the 17th time – second most in the state. The Spartans have had little trouble advancing to the finals over the years but have never been able to win the championship in eight tries.

Floyd Central is the lone holdover from last year’s finals having finished third. The Highlanders are back for the third time in four years and have two singles players and a doubles team that have each notched at least 23 victories this season. Floyd Central’s only trip to the final match came in 1993 when it finished as runner-up.

For more on each finalist, visit Meet the Teams.

Also on Saturday, the outer courts of the North Central complex will feature regional action in the Individual Singles and Doubles State Tournament. Singles players and doubles teams that win twice on Saturday will advance to the Individual State Finals on Oct. 20-21 at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis. Pairings
