SINGLES, DOUBLES TITLES TO BE DECIDED SATURDAY IN BOYS TENNIS

Eight singles players and five doubles teams are all that remain as the State Finals in Boy Tennis Singles and Doubles are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis.

 

All eight singles players will compete on Friday in quarterfinal competition while only one doubles match will be contested. The winners will each earn a spot in the semifinal round on Saturday morning at 10 am EDT. Championship and consolation matches are set for Saturday afternoon at 2 pm EDT.

 

Two individuals, both singles players, have competed previously in the Individual State Finals. Derek Carpenter, a Fort Wayne South Side junior, finished fourth a year ago, while Joseph Boesing, a Floyd Central senior, placed third in 2004. Boesing and the Highlanders finished third at last Saturday’s team finals in Indianapolis.

FOOTBALL SECTIONALS BEGIN FRIDAY

Eighteen teams successfully navigated the regular season to an unbeaten record as action begins Friday night in the 34th Annual IHSAA State Tournament Series.

 

Cass, Concord, Crown Point, Evansville Central, Fairfield, Hamilton Southeastern, Heritage, Heritage Hills, Lafayette Central Catholic, North Putnam, Northview, Norwell, Oak Hill, Plainfield, Sheridan, South Newton, Triton Central and Warren Central each bring spotless records into sectional action. Twenty-four more teams enter with one loss.

 

In all, 314 teams have entered the state tournament, three more than in 2005 and the most since the IHSAA moved to the five class system in 1985.

 

One hundred fifty-three games are scheduled for Friday with two more moved to Saturday. Results will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available.

Determining Home Team

First Round The second-named team in the blind draw is host school unless the two teams agree to switch the site.

Semifinals The team without a home game will host. Exception: The bye team will always be the visitor. If both teams were home or both were visitors, the second-named team in the quarter bracket will host.

Championship – The host team will be the team that has played the most away games. If both teams have played the same number of away games, the bottom bracket team shall host.

The 35th Annual IHSAA Volleyball State Tournament Series gets underway this week at 64 sites with some matches scheduled for early in the week. The majority of sites, however, will begin on Thursday, Oct. 19, with championship matches on Saturday, Oct. 21. Three hundred ninety-four schools have entered this year’s tournament.

CROSS COUNTRY SEMI-STATES SATURDAY

Cross country runners from across the state have one final hill to climb in order to qualify for the state meet as four sites will host semi-state races this Saturday in the 62nd Annual Boys and 27th Annual Girls tournaments.

 

Bloomington North, Franklin Central, New Haven and New Prairie will each coordinate girls and boys races to determine the qualifiers for the state finals on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Terre Haute. The top five teams and top 15 individuals in each race will earn a spot in the state meet.

 

Results from each site will be posted to the IHSAA website as they are received. Lane assignments for the state meet are expected to be available by noon on Monday from the IHSAA website.

SOCCER TOURNAMENTS ROLL ON TO SEMI-STATES

A big week of soccer is in store as the 13th Annual tournaments for girls and boys roll on at sites across the state.

 

The girls tournament features 32 teams scheduled to play regional matches on Wednesday, Oct. 18, with the winners of each match advancing to semi-state play at four sites on Saturday, Oct. 21.

 

Sixteen teams are all that remain in the boys tournament with semi-state matches scheduled for four sites this Saturday as well. Semifinal matches are scheduled for the morning hours with evening championship to determine each of this year’s state finalists. The state finals are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28 at Kuntz Memorial Stadium in Indianapolis.

 

Results from this week’s girls regionals and all of Saturday’s semi-state action will be posted to the IHSAA website as they are received, while information on each of the state finalist teams, including statistics and season results, is expected to be available next Tuesday.
