VOLLEYBALL STATE TITLES ON THE LINE SATURDAY AT HINKLE FIELDHOUSE

Half of last year’s state finalists return, including two defending state champions, as the 35th Annual IHSAA Volleyball State Finals are contested in the Indianapolis area this Saturday.

Four different sites will be used for the morning semifinals which begin at 9 am EST / 8 am CST with the winners at each site converging on Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University for the four state championship matches. The Class A match begins at 2:30 pm EST, with the 2A, 3A and 4A matches scheduled to begin no earlier than 4:15 pm, 6 pm and 8:10 pm, respectively. The 4A state championship match will be broadcast live to a state-wide audience on the Indiana Cable Network.

Eight of the 16 teams have advanced back from last year’s field of teams, including defending champions Muncie Burris (2A) and Michigan City Marquette (A). Burris has swept every 2A state title since 1997 while Marquette will be gunning for its third consecutive small school crown.

Besides Marquette, the other three teams that played in last year’s Class A tournament also return. Cowan, making its fourth consecutive trip will face last year’s runner-up Loogootee in the first semifinal. That match will be followed by Marquette taking on Northeast Dubois.

In Class 2A, Burris will take on Brownstown Central, another regular in the 2A state finals and making its fifth straight appearance. The winner of that match will go up against either Fairfield or Heritage. Fairfield has qualified for the state finals for the first time in volleyball. In fact, it’s the first Falcons team in any IHSAA team sport (baseball, basketball, football, soccer, volleyball) to advance to a state championship event since the Elkhart County school became a member in 1967. Heritage’s last appearance in the volleyball finals was back in 1980 and it’s the first Patriots team to advance to a state event since 1983 (girls basketball).

In the 3A tournament, none of last year’s participants made it back but it features four teams that have qualified for state at one time or another including three – Mishawaka Marian, Roncalli and Delta – which have each carried home the big trophy at least once. Marian takes on Jasper in the opener while Roncalli and Delta face off in the second semifinal.

In 4A, all four teams have played at this level in recent years. The first semi features, Muncie Central which has qualified every year since 2002, taking on Penn. These two faced off in the championship match in 2002 with the Bearcats carting off with the fourth of its five trophies. Penn has managed to advance to the finals every other year since 2000. The other semi will showcase New Albany and Indianapolis Cathedral. New Albany will compete in the state finals for the second time in three years, while Cathedral will attempt to advance to the 4A championship match for the fifth time in six seasons. They’ve finished as the runner-up the last two years.

The Meet the Teams file from the IHSAA website contains rosters, statistics and season results on all 16 squads.

AKRON’S KIRK ROBINSON TO RECEIVE OUTSTANDING OFFICIAL AWARD

During his career, Robinson has worked 18 sectionals, 12 regionals, three semi-states and five state championships in 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of 11 sports.

Robinson was nominated for this award by the Northern Indiana Officials Association (NIOA), one of 26 local associations in the state of Indiana.  His selection was made by a committee of representatives from those associations. Statewide, there are more than 8,000 licensed IHSAA officials in 11 sports.

In addition to volleyball, Robinson also officiates basketball and has worked two state championships in girls basketball in 2002 and 2005.  An active member of the NIOA, he has served as president, sports chairman, clinician and rules interpreter.

FORTY FOOTBALL SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES THIS WEEKEND

Forty sectional championship games in the 34th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament Series are scheduled for this weekend. Currently, all games are set to be played Friday evening.

The winners at each site will advance to a regional championship game the following week. Scores from each site will be posted to the IHSAA website on Friday along with regional contests.

Twenty-one of the games are rematches from regular season contests while nine are rematches from last year’s sectional finals.

Carmel and Hobart, each with a state-best 19 sectional championships to their credit, will look to add No. 20 on Friday. Carmel plays at Lafayette Jefferson in Class 5A, Sectional 4 action, while Hobart plays host to defending 4A state champ Lowell in Class 4A, Sectional 9.

Penn has ruled Class 5A, Sectional 2 for 11 straight years, the longest active streak in the state. The Kingsmen will put that mark on the line as they host LaPorte on Friday, one of six schools out for their first-ever sectional crown.

Franklin, playing at Whiteland in Class 4A, Sectional 14, hopes to end a 22-year drought since their last trophy, the state’s longest among the 80 teams remaining. The Grizzly Cubs last sectional crown came in 1984 as the representative from Cluster 29 in Class 3A. They defeated Seymour on the road, 13-8, in what was then a one-game sectional championship.
