REGIONAL FOOTBALL GAMES THIS WEEKEND

Four of the defending state champions won another sectional title last weekend and move on to regional competition when the 34th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament Series resumes this weekend.

Warren Central (5A), Lowell (4A), Jimtown (2A) and Sheridan (A), all of which won state titles in 2005, will be in action on Friday night while four of the 20 regional games have been moved to Saturday.

Warren Central, which won its seventh consecutive sectional championship last Friday, is closing in on the state record for consecutive tournament victories. The three-time defending 5A champs have won 21 straight post-season games, good for fourth place. A win at home against Ben Davis on Friday would tie them for second all-time. Roncalli set the record of 23 straight tournament wins from 2002-2005. Lowell, Jimtown and Sheridan have won nine straight dating back to last season.

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, last year’s runner-up in 3A, is one of nine teams remaining that won regional titles a year ago. The Trojans will be going after their sixth straight regional crown when they host Mount Vernon (Fortville) on Friday.

Seven teams will be attempting to win their first regional championships, including LaPorte (5A) and Madison-Grant (2A), both of which won their first sectionals in school history. LaPorte ended Penn’s 11-year run in Sectional 2 last weekend while Madison-Grant survived an overtime encounter against South Adams.

Three teams ended long droughts as North Putnam, Crown Point and South Newton each celebrated their first sectional title since the early-90s. North Putnam (2A) claimed its first since 1990 with its second win over Cascade this season, while Crown Point avenged its 2005 sectional final loss to Merrillville to win its first trophy since 1991. South Newton ended a dry-spell that dated back to 1992 with its 37-13 win over West Central. Those three moved to 12-0 on the year along with four other teams.

Carmel won its state-best 20th sectional championship, while Ben Davis, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard and Jimtown each earned their 17th, tied for third all-time.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS HONOR 2006 INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC ALL-STARS

The Indianapolis Colts will be honoring 24 high school student-athletes this Sunday, November 12 at 8:30 a.m. in Room 143-4 of the Indiana Convention Center (adjacent to the Budweiser North Lounge).

In conjunction with the Indiana High School Athletic Association and the Indiana Football Coaches Association, the Colts will cite 24 outstanding student-athletes with an award called the 2006 Indiana High School Academic All-Stars.

The Colts, the IHSAA and the IFCA have worked together for the past eight years to present this annual award to the top student-athletes at each position.  This year, the IFCA polled high school head coaches around the state, and the coaches tabbed approximately 80 players who ranked in the top five percent of their respective classes.  The IFCA selection committee narrowed the list to 24 winners, and those chosen truly represent the spirit of the award.  Twenty of the 24 honorees are either class valedictorian (18) or salutatorian (two).  Eight of the 10 high school regions throughout the State of Indiana have an award-winner, and each of the state’s five classes is represented on the all-star team.

The 24 2006 Indiana High School Academic All-Stars will be honored on Sunday at the morning program, and they will be presented at halftime of the Colts-Buffalo Bills game (kickoff is 1:00 p.m. ET).

“On behalf of Jim Irsay and the Irsay family, and with deep appreciation for the IHSAA and IFCA, the Colts are pleased to honor 24 outstanding football players who represent their families and schools in an outstanding manner,” said Colts President Bill Polian.  “The dedication it takes to be an excellent achiever in the classroom and on the playing field is something that goes unnoticed too often.  This award honors those young men who carry themselves with dignity, integrity and a sense of purpose.  They, like many other students, possess the values cherished in young adults.  We are pleased to identify these individuals, and it will be an honor to recognize them on our playing field this Sunday.”

“On behalf of the IFCA, this is a great opportunity to honor another group of outstanding high school student-athletes around the State of Indiana.  This is what the IFCA is all about, and we thank the coaches and parents who helped shape the lives of these young men,” said Mark A. Miller, athletic director and head football coach at Rochester High School and past IFCA president.  “Everyone I have talked with about this program is excited about the Indianapolis Colts’ participation with high schools.  We look forward to this being a long-lasting mutual relationship.”

The honorees on offense:

Wide receiver Mitch Huber (Bremen), wide receiver James Woodicka (West Lafayette), wide receiver Matt Burkhart (Lewis Cass), offensive lineman Ben Craw (Muncie South), offensive lineman Tyler Mason (Fort Wayne Snider), offensive lineman Michael Theising (Evansville Memorial), offensive lineman Drake Sayre (Alexandria), offensive lineman Matthew Ostendorf (Zionsville), quarterback Andrew Wiand (South Bend Riley), running back Brad Ellington (Warren Central), running back Joel Hungate (Eastern Hancock) and kicker Cory Anderson (Oak Hill).

On defense:

Defensive lineman Austin Fischer (East Noble), defensive lineman Marty Pritchett (Lapel), defensive lineman Cory Holloway (Yorktown), linebacker Nick Yoder (Concord), linebacker Reid Smith (Vincennes Lincoln), linebacker Keeton Zartman (Fairfield), linebacker Evan Bowman (Southwood), defensive back Kyler Gray (Shenandoah), defensive back Andy Parchman (Culver Academy), defensive back Mike Conway (Carmel), defensive back David Zimmer (Angola) and punter Cody Bearden (McCutcheon).

Media members are invited to cover Sunday’s press conference.  Reporters and photographers may report to Room 143-4 at 8:00 a.m.  For more information, please call Pam Humphrey at (317) 808-5111.
