NEW SCHOOL ENROLLMENTS AND CLASSIFICATIONS ANNOUNCED

Commissioner Blake Ress announced today the enrollment figures and classifications for each IHSAA member school in several sports for coming school years.

The enrollment figures linked below were submitted by the IHSAA member schools to the Indiana Department of Education this fall. Those numbers, the total of boys and girls in grades 9-12, are used to determine the classifications in the sports of baseball, boys and girls basketball, football, softball and volleyball.

The sports of baseball, boys and girls basketball, softball and volleyball are on a four-year classification cycle with these figures taking effect in 2007-08 and running through 2010-11.

Football, which is divided into five classes, is now reclassified every two years with the new figures affecting the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years. Those classifications will be released on Friday.

Sectional assignments in each sport will be announced this spring. Schools will be placed in the same sectional groupings in baseball, boys and girls basketball, softball and volleyball.

Four schools that joined the IHSAA in 2006 are included in the compilation but will not be eligible to compete in IHSAA tournaments until 2008-09. Those schools are 21st Century at Fall Creek, Bowman Academy, Herron and Indianapolis Metropolitan.

Also, per IHSAA By-Law, C-2-3c, a school may opt to play up one or more classes in a specific sport for that classification period by notifying the Association Office.

IHSAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION RESULTS APPROVED

Five incumbents were re-elected and three individuals selected for the first time summarize the results of the 2006 Board of Directors election which have been approved by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Re-elected to serve a three-year term beginning July 1, 2007 were:

·         Manchester principal Nancy Alspaugh – Northern District, Female Seat

·         Merrillville athletic director Janis Qualizza – Northern District, Urban Seat

·         Connersville athletic director Pam Noble – Southern District, Female Seat

·         Indianapolis Northwest principal Roy Simpson – Southern District, Minority Seat

·         Evansville Central athletic director Paul Neidig – Southern District, Urban Seat

Winning seats on the Board and beginning three-year terms on July 1, 2007 were:

·         Michigan City athletic director Robert Falls -- Northern District, Minority Seat

·         Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran principal John Marks – Private School Seat

·         North Daviess principal Jed Jerrels – District III, Class A Seat

Marks becomes the first person to occupy a seat designated for a private school representative following action taken by the Board of Directors at its May 1, 2006 meeting. Jerrels was elected to fill the vacant seat in District III, Class A, following the resignation of White River Valley principal Roger Weaver last June.

The Board of Directors election is conducted annually from Dec. 1-10 by mail vote with ballots cast by each member school principal for candidates within their respective district.

The Board is comprised of 19 seats which are filled by administrators or full-time teachers of grade nine or above from a member school in good standing or central office. Twelve board seats are filled by any qualified individual (open seats) from each of the three legislative districts, and six board seats are filled by two qualified female representatives, two qualified minorities, two qualified urban school representatives from the northern and southern districts and one private school representative. It is the duty of the Board of Directors to establish the rules and By-Laws of the Association.

Each Board member also serves on the Executive Committee which meets monthly and is responsible for regulating and controlling all athletic contests between and among member schools, conducting state tournaments sponsored by the IHSAA, determining penalties and forfeitures for violations of the By-Laws, and giving interpretations of the rules and By-Laws of the Association.
