WINTER TOURNAMENTS BEGIN SATURDAY WITH WRESTLING SECTIONALS
Three hundred nine schools
will be represented as sectional competition gets underway this Saturday at 32
sites in the 70th Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Tournament Series. This is the
first event of the winter sports tournament season which continues through the
next eight weeks.
The top four contestants in
each of the 14 weight classes at the sectionals will advance to one of 16
individual regionals on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Seven defending state
champions, including three two-time winners, are expected to compete on
Saturday. Five of the seven have moved up to a different class from last
year’s state tournament.
While competing as
individuals, participants also will be accumulating points for their school on
Saturday as the top two schools at the end of the day will advance all of their
wrestlers in each weight class into the separate team tournament. That
tournament, in its 13th year, is designed to determine the best team in dual
competition and begins with regionals on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 16 locations. Pairings for that
tournament were announced last Thursday.
Results from
Saturday’s wrestling sectionals will be posted at ihsaa.org as they
become available from the host sites.
