NATIONAL RECORD WITHIN REACH FOR CARMEL GIRLS SWIMMING TEAM
A
significant national record is within reach of the Carmel girls swimming and
diving team as the 34th annual IHSAA State Finals are set for Friday
and Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
They’ll
face a stiff challenge, but should the Greyhounds come away with their 22nd
consecutive state title on Saturday afternoon, they will have tied the
nation’s longest string of girls championships in any sport currently
held by Punahou of Honolulu, HI (1974-95). Punahou also won 22 straight in
girls swimming and diving. Carmel’s streak is the second-longest active
run in the country regardless of sport or gender only behind the 25 wrestling
titles won by Paulsboro, NJ.
Three
defending state champions in the individual events return for their final trip
to state.
Center
Grove’s Michelle McKeehan has dominated the individual medley and breaststroke
since her freshman season and if she wins both this weekend as the top seed,
she would become just the second girl in tournament history to sweep two events
all four years of her prep career. Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Benko of
Elkhart Central took the 100 and 200 freestyles from 1991-94. McKeehan enjoyed
two record-setting performances in both events at last year’s state meet
including a national mark in the IM (1:58.06).
Harrison’s
(West Lafayette) Jenny Connolly is the two-time defending title winner in the
100 backstroke and added the 100 butterfly to her resume last February. She
enters the weekend as the top seed in both.
Yorktown’s
Kelsi Hall, the second seed in the 50 freestyle, will be going after her third
consecutive championship in the event.
Without
diving participants included, Carmel has advanced 24 swims to Friday’s
prelims to lead the state. Last year’s state runner-up Hamilton
Southeastern qualified 21, Homestead 16 and Columbus North 14.
The
Greyhounds have three top seeds – the 200 free relay, sophomore Trish
Regan in the 200 free and senior Samantha Partridge in the 500 free. Hamilton
Southeastern has the top seed in the 200 medley relay with all four individuals
returning who set the state meet record last year – junior Maegan
O’Connor, senior Christina Jacobs, senior Lindsay Rogers and sophomore
Carly Mercer. Mercer also occupies the top spot in the 50 and 100 freestyles.
The top
eight divers at the four regionals this Tuesday night will make up the field of
32 in Saturday morning’s state diving competition.

GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAMS PUT WIN STREAKS ON THE LINE IN SECTIONALS
The 33rd Annual IHSAA Girls
Basketball State Tournament gets underway this week as sectional games are
scheduled to run through Saturday, Feb. 9, at 64 sites around the state.
Results will be updated
nightly on the IHSAA website as information becomes available from the hosts.
Three teams enter this
year’s tourney as hot as anyone in the state with long winning streaks in
tow. Class A, No. 1 and defending champ Oregon-Davis puts a 40-game streak on
the line that dates back to last season when it hosts Argos in Sectional 50 on
Tuesday. And Class 2A’s Oak Hill and 3A’s Northwestern
haven’t lost any of their 20 contests this season. Fort Wayne Northrop’s
57-game string from 1985 to 1987 stands as the state’s all-time best.
Among the other defending
state champions, two-time defending 2A champ and top-ranked Heritage Christian
will open at home against Park Tudor in Sectional 43. Class 3A winner Brebeuf
Jesuit will face Indianapolis Bishop Chatard in the first round of Sectional 26
at Beech Grove and, in 4A, South Bend Washington will host South Bend Clay in
Sectional 3.
Other top-ranked teams in
this week’s poll from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association
include 4A No. 1 Ben Davis which opens with Decatur Central in Sectional 12 at
Avon. In 3A, No. 1 Wawasee takes on host NorthWood in Sectional 21.
One member school, Tindley
of Indianapolis, will be making its first appearance in the girls basketball
state tournament. The Tigers will compete in Class A, Sectional 59 at
University. Another school, Morton Memorial, is entering the tournament for the
first time since 1998 and will participate in Class A, Sectional 58 at
Southwestern (Shelbyville).
Shenandoah, in Class 2A,
leads the state with eight consecutive sectional championships. Castle (4A)
follows with seven consecutive and South Bend Washington with six straight.
