BOYS BASKETBALL REGIONAL ACTION THIS SATURDAY
Nine of last year’s 16 regional champions have returned to
this Saturday’s regional round in the 98th Annual IHSAA Boys
Basketball State Tournament.
Among that group are six of last year’s state finalists and
three of the four defending state champions – East Chicago Central (4A),
Plymouth (3A) and Northwestern, which won the 2A title a year ago, but is competing
in 3A this year. In fact, the latter two could meet in Saturday night’s
championship game at Plymouth setting up the first tournament meeting between
two defending state champions from the previous year. For that to happen
though, No. 5 Northwestern (21-2) would have to defeat Kankakee Valley (13-10)
in the semifinal opener and No. 8 Plymouth would need to get past Hammond Clark
(15-7) in the second game.
Besides those two, several other ranked teams will be in action
and the most competitive site could be the Class 3A regional at
Washington’s Hatchet House where the four teams have a combined 82-8
mark. All four are ranked in 3A’s top 10 and three are listed in the top
five. The first game features top-ranked Evansville Memorial (20-1) meeting No.
10 Charlestown (20-3) with fourth-ranked and home-standing Washington (19-2)
facing No. 2 Edgewood (23-2) in the second game.
Terre Haute North boys
basketball coach Jim Jones, who will guide the Patriots in this weekend’s
4A Seymour regional against Evansville Reitz, has announced his retirement at
the conclusion of this season. With 680 career victories in 45 years on the
sideline and the last 23 at North, Jones is tied with Cloverdale’s Pat
Rady as the winningest active coach in the state and ranks fourth all-time.
Only Loogootee’s Jack Butcher (806), North Knox’s Howard Sharpe
(724) and Columbus North’s Bill Stearman (714) accumulated more victories
in state history.
The Class 2A regional final at Greenfield-Central will be webcast
live on Saturday evening at 8 pm ET at www.ihsaasports.org.
The game will feature the No. 8 Lawrenceburg-Eastern Hancock winner against the
No. 4 Winchester-Heritage Christian winner.
Please note that the location of each semi-state
game will be announced Sunday afternoon at www.ihsaa.org.
