GIRLS GYMNASTICS STATE MEET THIS SATURDAY

Two defending individual champions as well as the defending team champion are included in the field for Saturday’s 36th Annual Gymnastics State Finals at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis.

The opening ceremonies begin at 12:30 pm ET / 11:30 am CT with competition in four events beginning 30 minutes later.

A total of 31 schools are represented in the meet with eight – Center Grove, Chesterton, Columbus North, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran, Lawrence Central, Noblesville and Valparaiso – in the running for the team title. All but Noblesville are repeat entries from 2007 as the Millers are making their first state finals appearance as a team.

Lawrence Central, which won its first gymnastics team title a year ago, is back to defend that crown. The Bears dominated the competition on Friday and won their sixth straight regional crown at Harrison (West Lafayette). Sophomores Camille Hayes and Jessica Leko finished 1-2 in every event with Hayes winning the bars, floor and vault and Leko taking the beam.

Top-ranked and five-time champion Valparaiso should be a prime contender for its first title since 1998 this Saturday. The Vikings accumulated an incredible 114.8 points at their own regional and swept the top spots in every event and had the top three All-Around participants. Junior Kellie Kidd won the floor exercise and tied with classmate Emily Holmen on the beam while senior Abbey Sutton carried the bars and vault.

Junior Katelyn Fernandes of Center Grove returns as the defending All-Around state champion and the two-time winner in the vault. She garnered All-Around honors at the Columbus East regional on Monday night after winning the bars and vault and a third place showing in the floor exercise. As a team, however, Center Grove finished second to Columbus North snapping a five-year regional string for the Trojans.

Hannah Osborn is the other returning champion that will participate Saturday.  The Fort Wayne Concordia sophomore captured the state championship on the floor last year and took All-Around honors last Friday at the Huntington North regional after winning the bars and vault and finishing second in the beam and floor.

Concordia finished second to Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger on Friday and will make its second straight appearance in the state finals but will be without the services of sophomore Brannon Springer, last year’s state champion in the uneven bars. Springer suffered an ACL injury earlier this season.

Bishop Dwenger, which has won three state championships in the last six years, also suffered a big setback last month when senior Jeanna Van Hoey was sidelined with a season-ending knee and heel injury. Van Hoey won last year’s state beam title and also was the 2005 All-Around winner and 2005 and 2006 champ in the bars. The Saints still managed to get the better of Friday’s field winning its state-best ninth consecutive regional crown as junior Alicia Roche was first in the floor and second in both the bars and vault.

TRIP TO BASKETBALL STATE FINALS ON THE LINE SATURDAY

Five of the remaining 16 teams in the IHSAA boys basketball state tournament will be gunning for their first appearance in the March 22 state finals when semi-state action takes place this Saturday at four sites around the state. Each site will host a doubleheader with the first game beginning at 1 pm ET / 12 pm CT.

Each of the winners will earn a spot in the 98th State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Borden (1A), Brownsburg (4A), Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (2A), Indianapolis Lutheran (1A) and Triton (1A) will each be trying to break through to the state finals for the first time in school history. Borden, Bishop Luers and Lutheran are fresh off their respective schools first regional crown as well.

South Bend Riley, which knocked off defending 4A state champion East Chicago Central on a rebound basket at the buzzer on Saturday night, is on the doorstep of its first state finals appearance in 63 years. The 1945 Wildcats finished as the state runner-up to Evansville Bosse at the Indianapolis Coliseum just months before the end of World War II. Last Saturday, the Wildcats celebrated the school’s first regional title since 1990.

Marion, which faces Riley at Lafayette Jefferson, will be playing for a state record 14th semi-state championship and its first since 2000.

Several long winning streaks will be put on the line Saturday, too. New Albany owns the longest as the Bulldogs haven’t lost in their 26 outings this season. Westview has won 23 straight, Washington 19 consecutive and Batesville 18 in a row. The latter two will face each other in the second game at Seymour on Saturday which will be webcast live beginning at 3:30 pm ET on ihsaasports.org

Results from each game will be posted to ihsaa.org on Saturday as scores become available.
