IHSAA STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE SET FOR TUESDAY

For the fifth year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association is sponsoring its annual IHSAA Student Leadership Conference on Tuesday, June 17, at Carmel High School.

Last year’s conference drew a record 850 participants from 99 schools around the state making it the largest single-day student leadership conference in the country organized by a state athletic association. While this year’s numbers won’t reach last year’s record total, about 750 students from 92 schools entering grades 10-12 will be attending with the continual goal of fostering positive traditions through citizenship and leadership.

Each of the IHSAA’s 407 member schools was invited to send a team of six student-athletes with an adult facilitator to the conference which will include several speakers, both national and local, as well as over 30 different discussion sessions that the attendees may choose from.

Students-athletes will have the opportunity to meet and interact with each other while also hearing from Harvey Alston and Stephen Bargatze, both highly-acclaimed motivational speakers.

“In five years, our conference has grown into one of the largest in the country which we’re very proud of,” says Assistant Commissioner Sandy Searcy, who coordinates the Student Leadership Conference on behalf of the IHSAA. “But more important than being one of the largest is our goal of offering our young people useful life tools they can take away to help not only themselves but hopefully share with their classmates and their communities.”

Among the many topics included in the discussion sessions are: Leadership, Sportsmanship, College Preparation, Building Team Morale, Athletic-Related Careers, Community Service and Your School, Mental Preparation, Balancing Athletics and Academics and IHSAA Issues and Answers.

Members of the media are welcome to attend the event and should check-in at the Registration Desk at Entrance 1 on the south side of Carmel High School. Registration is from 8:30 am to 9:30 am ET.
