STATE SOCCER TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS DRAWN THIS MORNING

A field of 278 boys teams and 240 girls teams are entered as pairings for the 14th Annual IHSAA Soccer State Tournament Series were drawn this morning in Indianapolis.

The numbers of teams and participants have risen every year of both tournaments with 10 more boys teams and three additional girls teams entered than in 2006.

Boys sectional action at 64 sites will be played Thursday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 6. The 16 regionals will host four teams each with semifinal matches Wednesday, Oct. 10, and championship matches on Saturday, Oct. 13. The semi-states will be played Saturday, Oct. 20, and the state finals Saturday, Oct. 27, both using four-team formats.

The Lawrence Central boys team, ranked No. 1 in this week’s state coaches poll, drew No. 9 Indianapolis Cathedral for its opening match in the Heritage Christian Sectional.

Defending state champion and No. 3 Carmel faces Hamilton Southeastern in the Fishers Sectional.

The girls sectionals will begin a week later than the boys sectionals on Monday, Oct. 8, at 32 sites and run through Saturday, Oct. 13. One-match regionals are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 16 sites with the four semi-states on Saturday, Oct. 20. The state finals will be Saturday, Oct. 27.

Carmel’s girls team, ranked first in this week’s state coaches poll, drew the bye in the seven-team sectional at Hamilton Southeastern and will take on the Western Boone-Fishers winner.

Two-time defending state champion Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger is ranked fifth in this week’s coaches poll. The Saints will meet Fort Wayne North Side in its opener at the Fort Wayne Canterbury Sectional.
