GIRLS GOLF STATE FINALS BEGIN FRIDAY
A
total of 127 golfers representing 43 schools make up the field for the 35th
Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals which begins Friday, Sept. 28, at The
Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin. Second round play concludes the
following day.
Twenty-one
teams advanced five golfers each and 22 individuals have moved on without their
squads. Participants will tee off the Middle 9 course and the Road 9 course
beginning at 8:30 am ET / 7:30 am CT on Friday. Those teams and individuals
that make the cut will return for a second day on Saturday with the first group
again starting at 8:30 am ET. The first round tee times and pairings are
available here. Please note that a revised version of the
tee times was issued on Monday afternoon after its original release on Sunday.
Fourteen
of last year’s top 25 individuals return including Brownsburg senior Jordan
Woods, last year’s state runner-up.
Woods was tied for the lead
after the first day a year ago with eventual champion Emily Johnson of Warsaw
but finished two strokes back at the end of the tournament (72-74-146).
Two others that finished in
the top 10 also return. Junior Breana Patz of Avon (75-75-150) tied for fourth
last year and senior Kelly Short of Yorktown (75-78-153) tied for seventh.
Brebeuf Jesuit, which rallied
from 25 strokes down to win its first state championship in the sport last
year, returns three individuals from that team. The Braves ranked second in the
final state coaches poll of this season and also won the school’s first
regional crown last weekend at Smock Golf Course.
Top-ranked Martinsville is
playing in its fifth consecutive state finals after finishing third a year ago.
The Artesians appear prime contenders to win their record 10th state
title this weekend after winning their fourth straight regional crown at
Foxcliff Golf Course last Saturday. No other school has won more than four state
titles.
In addition to those Brebeuf
Jesuit and Martinsville, 13 other teams return from last year, including five
that advanced to the second day. Hamilton Southeastern, which finished as the state
runner-up in 2006, returns three players while four of the same players are
back for Noblesville from last year’s fourth place team. Roncalli (7th
place), Kokomo (8) and Greensburg (10) also played both rounds last season.
Fans and media are invited
to view the progress of the state finals by visiting www.golfstat.com. The IHSAA will
post the hole-by-hole scores for every player throughout the two days.
Also, a post-tournament
video will be available on Saturday evening at www.ihsaasports.org in the OnDemand Video
section. Highlights and interviews with players and coaches from the final day
of action will be included.
