BOYS SOCCER SECTIONALS BEGIN THIS WEEK, GIRLS NEXT WEEK

A field of 278 boys teams are set to begin sectional play as the 14th Annual IHSAA Soccer State Tournament gets underway this week with 240 girls teams beginning play next week.

 

Boys sectional action at 64 sites will be played Thursday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 6. The 16 regionals will host four teams each with semifinal matches Wednesday, Oct. 10, and championship matches on Saturday, Oct. 13. The semi-states will be played Saturday, Oct. 20, and the state finals Saturday, Oct. 27, both using four-team formats.

 

The Lawrence Central boys team, ranked No. 1 in this week’s state coaches poll, drew No. 9 Indianapolis Cathedral for its opening match in the Heritage Christian Sectional.

 

Defending state champion and No. 3 Carmel faces Hamilton Southeastern in the Fishers Sectional.

 

The girls sectionals will begin on Monday, Oct. 8, at 32 sites and run through Saturday, Oct. 13. One-match regionals are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 16 sites with the four semi-states on Saturday, Oct. 20. The state finals will be Saturday, Oct. 27.

 

Carmel’s girls team, ranked first in this week’s state coaches poll, drew the bye in the seven-team sectional at Hamilton Southeastern and will take on the Western Boone-Fishers winner.

 

Two-time defending state champion Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger is ranked fifth in this week’s coaches poll. The Saints will meet Fort Wayne North Side in its opener at the Fort Wayne Canterbury Sectional.

VOLLEYBALL, FOOTBALL STATE TOURNAMENT DRAWS NEXT WEEK

The pairings for the state volleyball and football tournaments will be announced on consecutive days next week.

 

Matchups for the 36th annual state volleyball tournament will be drawn beginning at 8 am ET / 7 am CT on Monday, Oct. 8. The complete draw will be posted to ihsaa.org and forwarded to state media outlets and member schools upon its conclusion.

 

The tournament draw for the 35th annual state football tournament will take place beginning at 7:06 pm ET / 6:06 pm CT on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and originate from the lobby of Emmis Communications on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.

 

This year’s football pairings show will not only be broadcast live on the IHSAA / Methodist Sports Medicine Championship Radio Network, but for the first time, video and audio of the show will be streamed live at www.ihsaasports.org.

 

Upon conclusion of the 90-minute broadcast, the complete pairings will be placed on the IHSAA website at www.ihsaa.org. Sectional first round games are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 19.

 

A total of 46 radio affiliates are scheduled to carry the radio broadcast and are listed below. Any interested radio station wishing to carry the show should immediately contact Liz Milne of Associated Sports Productions at 317-633-1462.

BOYS TENNIS SEMI-STATES SATURDAY

Following regional action this week, the 41st Annual IHSAA Boys Team Tennis State Tournament Series advances to the semi-state round this Saturday, Oct. 6.

 

The field of 16 teams will be reduced to just four state finalists by the end of that day as action is set for Homestead, Jasper, North Central (Indianapolis) and South Bend Clay.

 

Results from regionals and semi-state contests will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available from the host schools.

  • On Saturday, Sept. 29, two volleyball coaches achieved the 200th victory mark at the Pioneer Invitational in Boonville.  Amber Decoursey from Barr-Reeve notched her 200th win in the first match of the day as the Vikings outdueled Evansville Mater Dei, 13-25, 25-15, 25-22.  In the match for third place, Jenny Hannuksela from Mt. Carmel (Illinois) got her 200th win with a 25-19, 19-25, 25-18 victory over Sullivan. Mt. Carmel is the only Illinois member of the mostly-Indiana Big Eight Conference.
