BOYS SINGLES, DOUBLES STATE CHAMPS TO BE DECIDED SATURDAY

Four singles players and eight doubles teams, including the top duo from 2005, have advanced to this weekend’s state finals in boys tennis.

Quarterfinal action in doubles begins at 2 pm ET on Friday, while semifinal matches in both singles and doubles are set for 10 am ET on Saturday. Championship and consolation matches will be played at 2 pm ET. All matches are set for Park Tudor School in Indianapolis.

In 2005, Center Grove seniors Matt Smith and Zane Smith, who are not related, won the state doubles championship as sophomores. The pair is unbeaten on the 2007 season at 24-0, including 7-0 in the tournament, and will begin their quest for a second championship on Friday afternoon when they take on Brebeuf Jesuit’s Charlie Hurst and Adam Katz.

Another holdover also returns as Jasper senior Pete Wilson was one-half of the state runner-up doubles team last year. Wilson is paired with junior Tanner Niehaus this time around and have compiled a 21-4 record heading into the weekend where they’ll meet Highland’s Geoff Bach and Phil Kubisz (16-0) in the quarterfinals.

Of the four singles players in this year’s finals, Derek Carpenter of Fort Wayne South Side is the only one with prior experience at this level. Carpenter (24-2) will look to advance to the championship match for the first time after playing in the consolation match the last two seasons. He finished third a year ago and placed fourth in 2005. He faces South Bend Adams sophomore Omar Turk (15-1) in Saturday’s semifinals.

State Finals Media Credentials – The 2007-08 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential issued previously for the girls golf and boys tennis team state finals is good for admission. For those outlets without credentials and planning to cover the event, please fax a request on company letterhead containing names of the working individuals to Sports Information Director Jason Wille at 317-846-6601.
