CULVER’S BANFICH GOING FOR THIRD STRAIGHT AT CROSS COUNTRY
FINALS
Quite a bit of history could be in the offing this Saturday as the
LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute plays host to
the IHSAA Boys and Girls Cross Country State Finals.
For one thing, this year’s races will be a little more populated
than usual as four additional teams than in previous years now advance to the
state finals in both genders. With seven runners from 24 teams plus 27
individual girls and 30 individual boys, there will be nearly 200 competitors
that take to the course in each race. This is also the first year the state
tournament for girls has been run at the 5,000 meter distance.
Fifteen of the top 25 individual finishers in last year’s girls
race return including nine of the top 10. Tops among them is Alex Banfich, a
senior at the Culver Academies, and the two-time defending state champion.
Banfich will attempt to become just the second girl to win the
individual state title three consecutive years and the third to win three in
four years. Kankakee Valley’s Celeste Susnis won three straight from
1987-1989 while Brebeuf’s Courtney Adams won in 1992, 1993 and 1995.
Also of note is Westfield senior Maggie Bingham. Bingham has finished in
the top eight in each of her first three years, including a third place finish
in 2005 and runner-up finish last year. Bingham is one of four returning
scorers from last year’s Westfield pack which will attempt to win its
third consecutive team title. With a first place finish, the top-ranked
Shamrocks would become the fourth different school to win at least three
straight state titles (Carmel 1984-1988, 1995-97; Floyd Central 1989-92;
Valparaiso 2002-04). They have won each of their tournament races this
post-season.
A new state champion is assured in the boys ranks where two-time
defending champion Warren Central did not escape from last week’s
Franklin Central semi-state.
Top-ranked Fishers, which has finished first at each stop along the
tournament trail, will look to capture the school’s first state title in
any sport on Saturday. Fishers rejoined the IHSAA membership in 2006 after the
original school closed its doors in 1966 to consolidate into what became
Hamilton Southeastern. The Tigers return all seven runners that competed in last year’s state finals (the school
didn’t have a senior class in 2006 upon reopening), including junior Drew
Shields. Shields won the sectional and regional races and finished second at
last Saturday’s semi-state. He finished 13th last year in
Terre Haute.
Besides Shields, only three others return from last year’s
senior-heavy top 25 finishers. Bloomington North senior Mike Hoffmann (12th
last year), Terre Haute North senior Zachary Mayhew and Brownstown Central
junior Mark Crossman.

SOCCER STATE FINALS SATURDAY
The two-time defending state champion girls team and the top-ranked and
unbeaten boys team headline the field for the 14th Annual IHSAA
Soccer State Finals at Kuntz Memorial Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Boys semifinals are set for 10 am ET with the championship match at 6 pm
ET, while the girls semis begin at noon ET and the championship match at 8 pm
ET.
No. 1 and unbeaten Evansville Memorial (21-0-2) will take on unranked Goshen
(17-2-3) in one boys semifinal while No. 16 Chesterton (17-4-1) will face No. 7
North Central of Indianapolis (17-3-3) in the other match. None of the teams
has encountered any of the other three teams during the regular season.
Memorial is making its third straight appearance in the state finals and
fifth overall but has never been able to advance to the state title match. The
Tigers have only allowed one goal in the post-season which came in the semi-state
championship match last Saturday night. Goshen is riding the momentum of
winning the school’s first sectional championship in boys soccer this
year. Chesterton also is making its first appearance in the state finals
surviving a pair of overtime duels, including a 2-1 victory over last year’s
state runner-up team Elkhart Central for the semi-state crown. Elkhart had
eliminated Chesterton in last year’s semi-state opener. Over the years, North
Central has experienced as much success at this level as any team in the state.
The Panthers have never lost a state semifinal contest in their seven previous
appearances and they are 5-2 in the championship round, with their last title
coming two years ago.
In the girls tournament, No. 4 and two-time defending state champion Bishop
Dwenger (18-2-2) will meet No. 6 Penn (20-2) in one semifinal with No. 8 Center
Grove (20-3) facing No. 9 Indianapolis Cathedral (14-3-4) in the other match. The
only meeting between any of the teams this year was Center Grove’s 4-1
victory over Penn on Aug. 25.
Dwenger doesn’t enter the weekend unbeaten like it did a year ago,
but the Saints are as hot as any team in the field. They’ve won 10
straight matches and haven’t given up a goal since a 1-1 tie with No. 1
Carmel back on Sept. 15. They’ve outscored their competition 34-0 since
that match. Penn is a winner of 11 straight contests since falling in a match
on penalty kicks back on Sept. 11. The Kingsmen won an overtime contest last
Saturday night in the semi-state and will make their first appearance at state
since 1996. Center Grove will make just its second trip to the state finals and
first since its 1997 runner-up season. The Trojans have been tough on defense
of late not giving up a goal (30-0) in six tournament matches. Cathedral won
its first regional since 2000 last week and the Irish will play in the state
finals for the first time since 1994, the first year of the state tournament
series.

interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org
for consideration.
Albert Carpen of Hammond Clark (2004-07) broke baseball’s state record for
career RBI's with 179 last spring.
Fort Wayne South Side senior
tennis player Derek Carpenter, who
won the state singles championship over the weekend, owns the school record for
career wins (99) and career singles wins (99). Carpenter finished his
prep career with a 99-13 mark and played all 112 matches at No. 1
singles. Carpenter also set a Summit Athletic Conference record with a 36-0
career mark.
Carroll
(Flora) cross country teams both won
the Hoosier Heartland Conference Championships for the first time in the same
season.
Goshen’s boys soccer team, under coach Viratham
Mounsithiraj, won its first sectional, regional and semi-state titles this
year while setting a school record for most wins. The Redskins enter this
weekend’s state finals with a 17-2-3 mark. The school’s previous
best was 11 wins in 1999 and 2000.
Indiana School for the Deaf (8-2) has equaled the school record for victories
set in 1945. The Deaf Hoosiers will host 5-5 Indianapolis Lutheran on Friday.
In only its fourth year of
IHSAA eligibility, International School of Indiana
won its first sectional title in any sport by winning the Park Tudor boys soccer
sectional. The school fielded a co-ed team in 2007 which included four
pairs of brothers. The team included the Oluyedun brothers, Gonzalez Souto
brothers, Journel brothers and Jones brothers. ISI players represented
more than 10 countries on its roster this season.
Harrison (West Lafayette)
volleyball coach Lori Janssen recorded
her 250th win during the 2007 season. The Raiders have advanced to the Muncie
Central regional on Saturday. Also, senior soccer player Daniela Giuliani became Harrison’s all-time leader in career goals
scored with 53.
Marquette Catholic won its 10th consecutive
conference championship in volleyball this year. The Blazers never lost a
league contest during that stretch and are members of the new Greater South
Shore Conference this year. Previously, Marquette had been affiliated with the
Northland Conference.
South Adams High School
senior Adam McLaughlin
set school records in goals scored (31) and assists (15) in a season as he
led the Starfires to their first ever soccer sectional title this fall. The
team also set school records in goals scored (69) and assists (33) for the
season.
Oak Hill,
playing in just its second girls soccer season, finished with a 15-1-2 record
and its first sectional championship – a 2-1 victory over Marion. The
Golden Eagles season ended in the regional when Fort Wayne Snider scored the
