MUNCIE,
DELAWARE COUNTY HOST VOLLEYBALL STATE FINALS SATURDAY
Seven returning state
finalists, including two teams that won it all last year, have found their way
back to the IHSAA Volleyball State Finals which take place this Saturday.
For the first time, the
volleyball state finals will be played in Delaware County with Ball State
University’s Worthen Arena serving as the site for four state
championship matches that afternoon and evening.
Four different sites will be
used for the morning semifinals which begin at 9 am ET / 8 am CT with the
winners at each site converging on Worthen Arena for their respective state
championship match. Yorktown High School will host two semifinal matches in
Class 4A; Muncie Central will host the 3A matches, Delta the 2A contests and
Worthen Arena will be the site for the Class A semifinalists. The Class A state
title match begins at 2:30 pm ET, with the 2A, 3A and 4A matches scheduled to
begin no earlier than 4:15 pm, 6 pm and 8:10 pm, respectively. The 4A state
championship match will be broadcast live to a state-wide audience on the
Indiana Cable Network (affiliates to be announced later this week on the IHSAA
website) and all four title matches will be webcast globally in live video and
audio on ihsaasports.org.
Ten-time defending Class 2A
champion Muncie Burris headlines the list of 16 teams along with three-time
defending champ Marquette Catholic in Class A. Those two join three runner-up
teams from last year – Mishawaka Marian (3A), Fairfield (2A) and
Loogootee (A). Jasper (3A) and Brownstown Central (2A) were also state
finalists a year ago.
Marquette Catholic is making
its ninth straight appearance in the Class A state finals and has swept all
five tournament foes thus far. They’ll meet Lafayette Central Catholic
which beat Wes-Del in five games on Saturday to advance to state for the first
time. Morristown will face Loogootee in the other semifinal. Loogootee has
fallen in the final each of the past two seasons to Marquette. Should they both
advance, Marquette and Morristown also have met twice previously in the
championship match with the Yellow Jackets winning in 2003 and the Blazers
winning the following year. Marquette also took a 2-0 decision between the two
squads on Sept. 22.
Muncie Burris continues to
be the 2A kingpin with 18 state titles to their credit since 1982. Its
semifinal against Fairfield is a rematch of last year’s final which
Burris swept, 3-0. Brownstown Central, which is making its sixth straight trip
to state, will meet first-time participant Woodlan in the other early match.
Brownstown has been to the championship match five times since 1998 and each
time was turned away by Burris. The Braves have swept each of their five
tourney opponents this season.
In 3A, Brebeuf Jesuit will
be gunning for its third 3A crown in the last five years and will have to
defeat Bellmont for the second time this season to have a chance to do so after
a 2-1 victory on Aug. 25. Bellmont, looking to advance to its first
championship round, is making its fourth trip to state since 1978 and second in
three years. Mishawaka Marian led last year’s 3A title match, 2-0, before
surrendering three consecutive games to Roncalli and had to settle for the
runner-up spot for the second time (1999). The Knights will meet Jasper in the
other semi, winners of five straight 3-0 decisions and playing in its first
state finals since its 1991 runner-up season.
A first-time volleyball champion
in 4A is assured as each has played at this level previously but none has taken
home the big trophy. Floyd Central has come closest and is playing in its first
state finals since that 1990 runner-up campaign. The Highlanders have won all
five tournament tests by 3-0 scores. Across the net from Floyd Central stands
New Castle which is playing in its third finals and first since 2001. New
Castle resided in 3A the last four years before the current realignment moved
them back to 4A. Carmel is making its first trip to state since 1980 when eight
teams advanced to the state finals. Their opponent will be Elkhart Memorial
which is making its second appearance in five seasons in the state semifinals
after surviving a five-game thriller with LaPorte in last Saturday’s
regional final.
The Meet
the Teams file from the IHSAA website contains rosters, statistics and
season results on all 16 squads.

FORTY FOOTBALL SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES FRIDAY
Forty sectional championship
games in the 35th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament Series are
scheduled for Friday.
The winners at each site will
advance to a regional championship game the following week. Scores from each
site will be posted to the IHSAA website on Friday along with regional
matchups.
Only seven games are rematches
of a regular season contest and none are rematches from last year’s
sectional finals though 23 defending sectional winners are still alive heading
into the weekend.
Class A, No. 1 Sheridan won
its 32nd consecutive game last Friday to move into a tie for eighth
place on the state’s all-time list. The two-time defending state champion
Blackhawks (11-0) will host 4-7 Guerin Catholic in Sectional 36 Friday at 7:30
pm ET. Another victory would move them into a tie for sixth place. Sheridan also
will be looking for its 15th straight tournament victory.
All-Time Consecutive Victories
60: Bloomington, 1967-73.
39: Gary Emerson, 1920-25.
37: Eastern (Greentown), 1961-65.
34: East Chicago Roosevelt,

extend its state record streak of consecutive tournament victories. The
four-time defending state champs will look to win their 27th straight on Friday
night as the Warriors (8-3) host Hamilton Southeastern (9-2) for the Sectional
5 crown. The last time the two teams met came two years ago in the Class 5A
state championship game won by Warren Central, 55-20. A win would also mark the
eighth consecutive sectional crown for the Warriors, the longest active string
in the state.
The only matchup this week between two
undefeated teams takes place in Greene County where Class A, No. 2 Perry
Central (11-0) travels to No. 4 Linton-Stockton (11-0) Friday at 8 pm ET.

Thirteen teams are playing for the their
school’s first sectional championship in football, while six teams –
