SHERIDAN
LOOKING FOR 34TH CONSECUTIVE WIN FRIDAY
Nine undefeated teams remain
and five schools celebrated sectional titles last weekend as regional games are
set for this weekend in the 35th Annual IHSAA Football State
Tournament.
Eighteen games will be
played Friday evening while two others have been moved to Saturday. The 20
winning teams will advance to semi-state contests the following weekend.
In Class A, No. 1 Sheridan will
be playing for its 34th straight victory on Friday when the two-time
defending state champion Blackhawks (12-0) play at Tri-County (9-3) on Friday
at 7:30 pm ET. A win would tie the Blackhawks for fourth place on the state’s
all-time consecutive victories list. Sheridan also will be going for its 16th
straight tournament victory.
All-Time Consecutive Victories
60: Bloomington, 1967-73.
39: Gary Emerson, 1920-25.
37: Eastern (Greentown), 1961-65.
34: East Chicago Roosevelt,
1944-48.
34: Warren Central, 1983-86.
33: Delphi, 1964-67.
33: Decatur Central, 1968-70.
33: Sheridan, 2005-current.
The reign of four-time defending state
champion Warren Central came to an end last Friday as Hamilton Southeastern
(10-2) topped the Warriors, 31-10, and will play host to No. 2 and unbeaten Pike
(12-0) Friday. It was the first tournament loss for Warren Central since 2002
after 26 consecutive victories in the post-season and halted their sectional
championship streak at seven years.
Pike, along with Jay County, Heritage
Christian, Wheeler and Triton, will be playing for a regional crown for the
first time this weekend after celebrating their school’s first sectional
championship.
Churubusco (10-2), which hosts 6-6 Triton on
Friday night in Class A, will be trying to end the longest regional drought
among the 40 teams still alive. The Eagles, who won their first sectional since
1988, last won a regional crown back in 1983.
The only matchup this weekend between two
undefeated teams occurs in Class A, where No. 4 Linton-Stockton (12-0) travels
to No. 5 Rockville (12-0). This will be the first meeting between the two since
the 1997 regional game when Linton-Stockton took a 31-6 decision.
None of this week’s games are rematches
from last year’s tournament and the 4A showdown with Lowell (11-1) at
Griffith (9-3) is the lone rematch of two teams who met earlier this season. Griffith
won a 29-28 overtime thriller on the road back on Sept. 7.
Scores from each game will
be posted to the IHSAA website this weekend along with semi-state matchups.
