WRESTLING SECTIONALS KICKSTART WINTER TOURNAMENT SEASON

The first event of the winter tournament season begins this Saturday as sectional action comes to 32 sites in the 71st Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Tournament Series.

Three hundred eleven schools will be represented this weekend and the top four contestants in each of the 14 weight classes will advance to one of 16 individual regionals on Saturday, Feb. 7.

While competing as individuals, participants also will be accumulating points for their school on Saturday as the championship school will advance its entire team into the separate team tournament. Runner-up teams will not advance to the team tournament this year after the IHSAA Executive Committee, at its Nov. 7 meeting, eliminated the team semi-states and also allowed a fourth qualifier in each weight class to advance from the individual regionals to the individual semi-states. The team tournament begins with regionals on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at eight locations. Pairings were announced last Thursday.

Results from Saturday’s wrestling sectionals will be posted at ihsaa.org as they become available from the host sites.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

Have an interesting note? A conference or school record, coaching milestone or something else of interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

Center Grove’s Sarah Higgens, this year’s IHSAA cross country state champion, was recently named the 2008-09 Gatorade Indiana Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. She is the first girls cross country runner from the school to be honored with the award. The senior won the state title in Terre Haute on Nov. 1 in a time of 18:14.0. She set a course record during the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference meet and also earned victories at the sectional and regional level. Higgens carries a 4.06 GPA in the classroom and is also an accomplished violinist.

Columbia City girls basketball coach Wayne Kreiger picked up his 500th career victory on Jan. 17 as the Eagles beat Northeast Hoosier Conference-rival Homestead, 44-37. Kreiger is in his 33rd year on the Columbia City bench and becomes just the fifth girls coach in state history to collect 500 wins joining Gary West Side’s Rod Fisher who picked up his 500th on Dec. 17.

Oregon-Davis senior guard Aubrey Minix set a new Indiana state career record last Thursday with 322 three-point field goals, bettering former Wawasee great Shanna Zolman's mark of 319. The record-breaker came with 4:12 left in the third quarter in a 44-26 win over John Glenn in the Bi-County Tourney at LaVille. She finished the night with 13 points and four three-pointers. Minix was a starting guard on Oregon-Davis’ 2006-07 Class A state championship team. The Bobcats, currently 14-2, are ranked third in this week’s Class A poll from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.

North Central High School in Indianapolis will recognize the 10-year anniversary of its 1999 boy’s basketball state championship team on Saturday, Jan. 31 when the Panthers host Warren Central at 7:30 p.m. ET. Players, coaches and managers from the state championship team will be honored during a special halftime ceremony, but all North Central basketball alums are invited back for the celebration. Former varsity basketball players wishing to attend the celebration should contact Fred Andrews at 317-430-7464 or faaandrews@yahoo.com.  Members of the media wishing to cover the event should contact Matt Segal at 317-501-3627 or msegal@horizonleague.org.

Southern Wells senior Meghan Prible became her school's second leading scorer on Jan. 19 by going over the 1,000-point mark. She had nine points against Leo to reach 1,001 points. The following night she scored 14 against Wes-Del to up her total to 1,015. The Raiders' leading scorer is Cindy (Schweikhardt) Brooks.
