GIRLS
SWIMMING & DIVING SECTIONALS START THURSDAY
A total of
239 schools are entered as the 35th Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving
Tournament Series gets underway Thursday afternoon, Feb. 5, with sectional
preliminary heats at 20 sites around the state. Diving prelims and semifinals
start Saturday morning, Feb. 7, at each site with consolations and finals in
each event scheduled for later in the day.
All first
place swimming event winners in each sectional will advance to the state meet
along with any participant who equals or betters the state time standard in
that event’s consolation or championship heat. The next fastest times in each
event also will qualify in order to bring the field to 32 entrants. The top
four divers at each sectional will advance to one of four diving regionals slated for Tuesday, Feb. 10, with the top eight
advancing to the state meet. This year’s state finals are set for Feb. 13-14 at
the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Looking
ahead to next week’s state finals, top-ranked Carmel will be chasing its 23rd
consecutive state championship which would set a new national high school
record in girls swimming and diving. Currently, the Greyhounds share the mark
of 22 with Punahou High School of Honolulu, HI which
won 22 straight from 1974-95.
Results
from each sectional site will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become
available this weekend. State finals heat sheets will be available beginning
Sunday, Feb. 8. Diving regional results and the order of participants for the
state meet will be posted on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

interesting note? A conference or school record, coaching
milestone or something else of interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports
Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.
North Miami
girls basketball player Alicia Burrus scored the 1,000th
point of her career against Wabash on Jan 24, 2009. She is the fourth girl in
school history to reach that mark.
Rossville’s
Aaron Martin became the 15th
varsity boys basketball player in school history to
score 1,000 career points during a 71-59 victory at Frontier on January 3.
Fort Wayne Bishop
Luers junior Deshaun Thomas recently
broke the Allen County scoring record on January 16 in a 76-69 win over Fort
Wayne Northrop. Needing only three points to break the record, Thomas did
so with a three-pointer just 1:19 into the game and finished with 27 points and
15 rebounds. The previous county record of 1,823 points was previously
held by Fort Wayne Elmhurst's James Hardy, now a wide receiver with the Buffalo
Bills. Prior to Hardy breaking the record in 2004, the scoring mark had stood
for 40 years. Two games later on Jan. 23, Thomas scored 33 points in a
75-68 win over Harding to pass his own coach's career scoring mark of 1,897
points. His coach, James Blackmon, played for Marion from 1980-83. Thomas
is only 52 points shy of moving into the top 50 all-time scoring leaders in
state history.
Tri High
School senior Shaye Warman
became the girls all-time leading scorer with 11
points in a victory over Monroe Central on Jan. 24. She passed Denise Shelton
(1998) with a total of 1,251 points in her career.
