NEW NATIONAL RECORD AT NATATORIUM THIS WEEKEND?
A year
after tying the national girls record for consecutive state championships,
top-ranked Carmel will attempt to move the bar a notch higher this weekend in
the 35th Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals.
If its able to capture its 23rd consecutive state
title this weekend, Carmel would set the new standard in high school girls
sports after tying Punahou of Honolulu, HI (1974-95)
last February. Currently, the Greyhounds own the longest active string in the
nation in any sport after Paulsboro, New Jersey was unable to extend its streak
of 25 consecutive wrestling championships last winter.
Preliminary
swimming heats will begin Friday at 6 pm ET at the Indiana University
Natatorium with the top 16 in each event returning Saturday for the championship
and consolation finals scheduled for 1 pm ET. Diving regionals
will take place at four sites on Tuesday with the top eight at each advancing
to the state finals. The state diving competition begins Saturday at 9 am ET.
Carmel
boasts the top seed in seven of 11 swimming events heading into Friday’s
action, including all three relays. Four different Greyhounds earned the
fastest time in the state during last Saturday’s sectional action. Seniors
Megan Detro and Jessie Hammes
occupy the coveted fourth lane in the 50 freestyle (23.79) and 100 backstroke
(56.07), respectively. Sophomore Rhiannon Sheets turned in a 1:50.80 in the 200
freestyle and junior Trish Regan clocked the fastest time in the 200 IM in
2:02.82 and was third-fastest in the 100 free. Regan, last year’s 200 free state champ, will not defend her title in that event.
Hamilton
Southeastern junior Carly Mercer is the lone
returning state champion in any individual race having clocked a 50.87 in the
100 freestyle on Saturday for the state’s top time and bettered the 50.95 that
earned her last year’s title. She also comes in with the fourth-best time in
the 200 free and should swim on a couple of HSE’s
three relays having anchored their state title-winning 200 medley and 400
freestyle relays in 2008.
Others that
top their respective events include Penn junior Nikki Hubbard in the 100
butterfly (55.22), last year’s seventh place finisher; McCutcheon sophomore Megan
Gallagher in the 500 freestyle (4:57.30), and the 16th place
finisher a year ago and; Homestead sophomore Tori Bagan in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.41), the third place
finisher in 2008.
Without
diving included, Carmel leads the way with 26 swims heading into Friday’s
prelims. Last year’s runner-up Hamilton Southeastern is next with 19 and
Chesterton and Homestead follow with 14 each.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE
Have an
interesting note? A conference or school record, coaching
milestone or something else of interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports
Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.
Park Tudor boys and
girls varsity tennis coach Dave Heffern was
inducted into the Indiana High School Tennis Hall of Fame at the annual IHSTeCA banquet last Friday. Heffern began coaching Park Tudor's teams in 1995 and has
compiled an impressive 503-64 win loss record. His teams have garnered 11 IHSAA
team state championships (6 girls and 5 boys) including a state record-tying four
consecutive girls titles from 2005-08.
Girls basketball coach Martin Huber notched his 250th career
win as Bremen defeated Rochester 63-43 on January 29th.
During his 19 year tenure, Huber is
250-145 with five sectional and two regional championships along with seven Bi-County
Tournament crowns and six conference titles.
During Oak Hill’s 65-40 win at Eastern (Greentown) on Jan. 27, two Lady
Golden Eagles reached the 1,000 point mark in the third quarter of play. Junior
Courtney Moses hit a three-pointer to reach the milestone and, just 1:12
later, senior Kristen Hicks made it by scoring on a break-away layup.
Play was halted and both were recognized and presented with a game ball. They
became the fourth and fifth Oak Hill girls players to
do so joining Laura Speicher (1,110), Amy Berry (1,091)
and Andrea Monroe (1,020).
Indianapolis
Cathedral senior Adrienne Sahm scored the 1,000th point for her career
at the Twin Lakes tournament this past December.
Brook Schutte, a senior forward for Edgewood,
went over the 1,000 point mark for her career in a game against Bedford North
Lawrence on January 24. Schutte is now the
second-leading all-time scorer for the Lady Mustangs behind Sarah Thompson.
Kate Atkinson is the only other EHS girls player to
surpass 1,000 points for her career.
In addition to Shutte,
three other southwestern Indiana girls basketball
players also reached the 1,000 point milestone within the last month. White
River Valley junior Steph Fougerousse
was the first to do it. She was joined by Owen Valley senior Nickole Gonser who
hit the mark on Jan. 16 against Brown County and Fougerousse’s
senior teammate Kelsey Anderson reached
it in a Jan. 31 victory at Linton-Stockton.
Fishers senior Drew
Shields has been named the 2008-09 Gatorade Indiana Boys Cross Country
Runner of the Year. Last fall, Shields won the individual state title in
15:20.3 and helped his team to a fifth-place team finish. Last year, Shields
led the Tigers to the cross country team title and also won the 800 and 1600
meter races at the state track meet.
Wabash junior Brooklyn Short scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 27th against
Bluffton. Short is just the fourth girl to score 1,000 points at Wabash. Coach Scott Bumgardner
picked up is 100th career win on Jan. 21st when the Lady Apaches defeated Lewis
Cass.
Eminence girls
basketball player Aulani Sinclair scored a career-high 52
points on Feb. 5 in a 91-26 win over Baptist Academy. She ended the regular
season with 1,726 career points.
Roncalli boys basketball coach Michael Wantz

on Feb. 3. Wantz is in his seventh season as the
Rebels head coach and is only seven wins from becoming Roncalli's
all time leader in victories. His teams have won two sectional
titles and one regional championship during his tenure.
