SECTIONAL ASSIGNMENTS APPROVED
The
sectional assignments for the 2009 and 2010 football state tournaments were approved
Friday by the IHSAA Executive Committee at its March meeting. The format was
designed by the 15-person Football Realignment Committee with representatives
from all three IHSAA legislative districts and every classification and was
forwarded to the Executive Committee for its approval.
A total of
319 football-playing schools were assigned to 40 sectionals within the
five-class structure. Of those 40 sectionals, all but one (Class 5A, Sectional
8) will have eight teams for the next two seasons. Those eight team sectionals
will have four first-round games, two semifinal games and the sectional
championship game over a three-week period. Sectional 8 will have three
first-round games with one team receiving a bye into one of the two semifinals
followed by the championship game.
A total of
28 schools will play in a different classification than they had in the
previous two-year cycle.
