NEW PALESTINE, WHITING RETURN TO DEDEND SOFTBALL CROWNS

Two defending state champions are among five teams set to make a repeat appearance this weekend as the 25th IHSAA Girls Softball State Finals take place around the Indianapolis area.

Two semifinal games at four different sites will be played Friday beginning at 6:30 pm ET. The second games will not begin any earlier than 8:30 pm ET. The sites of the semifinals are as follows: Ben Davis hosting Class 4A, Pike hosting 3A, North Central the site for 2A and Hamilton Southeastern the site for Class A. Saturday’s four state championship games will each be played at the Ben Davis High School Softball Complex on Indianapolis’ west side. The Class A championship contest is set to begin at 10:30 am ET, the 2A final is scheduled for 1:30 pm, 3A at 4:30 pm and 4A at 7:30 pm.

Class A No. 3 Whiting and 3A No. 1 New Palestine have each journeyed back after last year’s state championship victories and will be joined by three others from 2008 -- Bellmont (3A), Indianapolis Lutheran (A) and Tecumseh (A).

Whiting will be seeking its third championship in four seasons when they take on No. 1 Tecumseh in a rematch of last year’s Class A finale. Tecumseh, the winner of 16 straight, has won its semifinal game in three of its four trips to state but has come up short in the title game each time. Neither team has allowed a run in the post-season. The other semifinal pits No. 6 Indianapolis Lutheran against No. 10 Cowan in the other semi. Lutheran, the 2007 state champ, is back for the third consecutive year and hopes to win a state title for its rookie coach Nikki Wixson, who would earn the distinction as the first to win a state title as both a player and coach. Wixson, then Nikki Naffziger, was a pitcher on the Saints’ 2004 state championship squad. In that game she pitched a Class A title game record 15 innings, struck out 24 and earned the Mental Attitude Award.

New Palestine survived a 7-6, eight inning game last Saturday night to return to the state finals where they will meet unranked Bellmont in the semis for the second year in a row. The Dragons scored in the bottom of the 10th in last year’s meeting to take a 1-0 victory and went on to take their second 3A title in five years. Bellmont has been a regular participant in the state finals over the years advancing this far six times and four times since 2004, but the Braves will be looking to win their first semifinal since their 1989 state runner-up season. Third-ranked Gibson Southern makes its fifth finals appearance this decade and hopes to add a third state trophy to go along with those won in 2003 (2A) and 2005 (3A). Junior pitcher Lauren Edwards enters the weekend having thrown three consecutive no-hitters (more on her performances in the “News & Notes from Around the State” section at the bottom) The Titans will face No. 10 Andrean, making its third trip to state in five seasons and won it all two years ago.

The 2A foursome consists of one former state champion and three schools making their first state finals appearance not just in softball but in any IHSAA team sport (baseball, basketball, football soccer, softball, volleyball). A pair of unranked teams will tangle in the opener with Wheeler facing Linton-Stockton, winners of 15 consecutive, while unranked Madison-Grant meets No. 1 Indianapolis Scecina, the 2007 state champion in the second contest.

Fourth-ranked Center Grove is the only top 10 team remaining of the four Class 4A teams this weekend. The Trojans turned away No. 1 Avon and No. 3 Carmel in the regional to advance to their record 11th state finals tournament and are in the hunt for a record fifth state crown. They’ll face unranked Lowell, a 2007 finalist, in the second game on Friday. The early game features first-time participant Floyd Central, the winner in 14 of their last 16 games, and Harrison (West Lafayette) which is playing in the finals for the first time in 20 years. The Raiders knocked out defending 4A champ, McCutcheon, in the sectional final.

Check www.ihsaa.org throughout the weekend for scoreboard updates on all the contests. Line scores will be posted for Friday’s eight games with complete computerized box scores available for Saturday’s four state championship games.

LAFAYETTE’S DAN HALLADAY TO BE HONORED WITH UMPIRE AWARD

Dan Halladay of Lafayette is the recipient of the 2009 Interscholastic Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the sport of softball.  Dan will be honored in a special ceremony at this weekend’s state finals tournament.

Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of 11 sports during the school year.

During his career, Halladay has worked 17 sectionals, 13 regionals, three semi-states, and three state finals tournaments.

Halladay was selected for this honor by a committee representing the officials associations.  In Indiana there are 26 associations made up of men and women who give up much of their personal time to assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile, and healthy activities for the student-athletes in our state. Statewide, there are more than 8,000 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports.

Halladay has completed 20 years of officiating in the sports of softball and football and has been a member of the Western, Wabash Valley, and Lake County Officials Associations. He also officiated for five years in Michigan before moving to Indiana.

Halladay attended Western Michigan University where he earned a B.A. in Secondary Education; he went on to Indiana State University where he completed an M.A. in Secondary Education. He has been a teacher and coach at Southeast Fountain School Corporation in Veedersburg for 29 years. Halladay has been married to his wife Karen for 26 years.  They have three children, Brian, Matt and Suzanne.

SINGLES, DOUBLES CROWNS UP FOR GRABS IN GIRLS TENNIS

Six singles players and eight doubles teams converge on North Central High School in Indianapolis this weekend to determine the individual state champions in girls tennis.

Two first round singles matches and four in doubles are scheduled for Friday afternoon at 2 pm ET with the winner of each advancing to Saturday’s 10 am ET semifinals round. Championship and consolation matches will follow at 2 pm ET.

The loaded singles bracket includes five undefeated players so far this season with last year’s winner Caroline Hedrick (25-0) of Columbus North leading the way. The junior earned a bye into Saturday’s semifinals after her team advanced to the semi-state championship match on May 30. Also picking up a bye into the semis is Munster’s Mary Hill (26-0), the state’s winningest singles player with a 102-1 record. Her lone blemish was to Hedrick in last year’s semifinal round. The two could meet in this year’s state championship match.

Avon’s Christina Riley (19-0) will play in her third state singles tournament in four years this weekend and matches up against fellow unbeaten Caroline Eberhart (24-0), a freshman from Mishawaka Marian. Another freshman without a defeat, Bethany Moore of Lebanon (24-0), takes on Terre Haute North senior Brittany Farmer (21-5).

In doubles, Andrea and Jessica Simon, both sophomores from the Culver Academies, bring a perfect 10-0 mark into the weekend. They’ll face Marion’s Alex Davis and Alex Lester (24-1), one of five tandems with one loss on the year.

Fort Wayne Canterbury’s Caroline Wright is the lone holdover from last year’s doubles tournament. Wright and her partner lost in last year’s quarterfinal round but she returns with senior Anna Rao on her side of the net and the two have combined for a 19-7 mark this season.

Results will be available at www.ihsaa.org following each session.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

Have an interesting note? A conference or school record, coaching milestone or something else of interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

Riverton Parke freshman pitcher Haley Chambers set a school record with 29 strikeouts in the Panthers 2-0 loss to North Putnam on May 19. North Putnam sophomore pitcher Taylor Judy recorded 19 strikeouts as both pitchers threw complete games. According to the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports website, Chambers’ 29 strikeouts ties for 3rd most all time in a single game.

Gibson Southern pitcher Lauren Edwards, a junior righthander, has pitched three straight no-hitters heading into the state semifinals, each time coming within one batter of a perfect game. She pitched a five-inning no-hitter May 29 in a 10-0 sectional final win over Mount Vernon at Boonville. She retired the first 14 batters before the 15th reached on a third strike-wild pitch with two out in the fifth. During last Saturday’s regional at Boonville, Edwards threw back-to-back no-hitters, her fifth and sixth of the season. She pitched a no-no with 12 strikeouts in a 3-0 semifinal win over Corydon Central, walking the third inning's lead-off batter before retiring the last 15. She then retired No. 2-ranked Edgewood's first 12 batters in the championship game, extending her streak to 27, before walking the lead-off batter in the fifth. From there she retired the last nine, closing with her eighth and ninth strikeouts and a 4-0 win.

Munster’s No. 1 singles player Mary Hill became the winningest girls singles player in state history when she captured her 101st victory in the morning round, a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Wild. She added a 102nd win in the consolation match and stands 102-1 in her four seasons as a Mustang heading into this weekend’s state singles tournament.

The 2009 Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic will be held Saturday, June 20, at the New Castle Fieldhouse in a four-game format beginning at 12 pm ET. A total of 98 players will participate with tickets priced at $5 per game or $15 all day. Profits from the Classic will go to the United Fund of Henry County which consists of 11 different agencies ranging from WIC (Women and Infant Children) to Food Bank to Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Also a matching fund will be formed in the five school districts of Henry County to help families in need purchase school books.

Evansville North golfer David Mills tied the McDonald Golf Course record when he shot a 62 (-10) during the recent Southern Indiana Conference meet in Evansville. As a team, the Huskies totaled an amazing 274 (-14).

Crawfordsville junior pitcher Steven Rice threw a school record 21 strikeouts in his team’s 6-0, 11-inning victory over county rival Southmont in the opening game of Class 3A Sectional 25 at Danville. Rice, who came on in relief to earn the save in last year’s 3A state championship game, pitched the maximum 10 innings before giving way to sophomore cousin Cory Rice. The left-hander’s total was one shy of the state record 22 held by three individuals – Danny Gunn of Thorntown (1969), Lance Lynn of Brownsburg (2005) and Tim Maki of Carroll (Fort Wayne) (1980). Southmont senior Jared Earle also threw 10 scoreless innings striking out 10 Crawfordsville batters.

Ashley Schoen, a sophomore from Lanesville, pitched a perfect game against Christian Academy of Indiana in the first round of this years sectional tournament at Henryville.  Ashley struck out 14 of the 15 batters she faced in the shortened five inning game.

The Norwell girls' tennis team defeated Bellmont, 3-2, on May 19 to give coach Terri Worden her 300th win. She received flowers, 300 packs of pretzels, and a cake with 300 candles from her players. In her 33rd year as a tennis coach, Worden has an overall record of 300-189.
