GIRLS GOLF STATE FINALS BEGIN FRIDAY
A total of 128 golfers representing 44 schools make up the
field for the 36th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals which begins Friday,
Oct. 3, at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin. Second round play
concludes the following day.
Twenty-one teams advanced five golfers each and 23
individuals have moved on without their squads. Participants will tee off the
Middle 9 course and the Road 9 course beginning at 8:30 am ET / 7:30 am CT on
Friday. Those teams and individuals that make the cut will return for a second
day on Saturday with the first group again starting at 8:30 am ET. The first
round tee times and pairings are available here.
Fourteen of last year’s top 25 individuals
return including Greensburg junior Brianna Scheidler who
tied for third in last year’s championship meet (73-76-149). Others returning
from last year’s top 10 include Columbus North junior Taylor Gohn (72-78-150, sixth place), South Bend St. Josephs’ senior
Anne Ormson (75-76-151, tied for ninth) and Evansville
North sophomore Natalie Schmett (72-79-151, tied for
ninth).
Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern returns four of its top
five players from last year’s runner-up team and is making its fourth straight
trip to state. The Royals posted a 304 at sectional and a 309 at regional to
win both crowns. The latter, posted at Westwood Country Club in New Castle,
ranks as the second-best regional score ever posted in state tournament history.
No. 2 Martinsville, which won its 10th girls
golf state title last year, returns for a sixth straight year and is anchored
by senior Carleigh Silvers and junior Kelsey Benson,
both of whom finished among last year’s top 22. No. 3 Roncalli
returns two players from last year’s fifth place squad and has three freshmen
occupying its third, fourth and fifth spots. The returnees – senior Erin
Buckley and sophomore Jamie Caylor – both finished
tied for 25th a year ago. No. 4 Avon has advanced to the
championships for the fourth straight year with the hope of advancing to the
second day for the first time. No. 5 Columbus North returns three players after
a third place finish in 2007, its best showing since its runner-up year in 1973.
Noblesville, which finished fourth overall last year in the
team standings, boasts three players with state finals experience but had to
settle for second place the last two weeks behind Hamilton Southeastern. The
Millers have enjoyed an outstanding tournament to this point turning in a 314 at
the sectional and a 318 at the regional.
In addition to those aforementioned, eight other teams from
last year’s finals return to The Legends -- Carmel, DeKalb, Evansville Memorial, Greensburg, Indianapolis
Cathedral, Plymouth, Richmond and Twin Lakes. Evansville Memorial has advanced
for the ninth straight year; Twin Lakes for the sixth consecutive year and;
Greensburg the fifth.
