STATE VOLLEYBALL TOURNEY PAIRINGS SET
The pairings for the 37th
Annual IHSAA Volleyball State Tournament Series were drawn this morning by
Commissioner Blake Ress at the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis.
Three hundred ninety-six
schools (396), one more than last year and the most since 1984, have entered
this year’s tournament with sectional play beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 21,
and wrapping up on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 64 sites across four classifications.
Regional matches will be
played Saturday, Nov. 1, at 16 sites with the winners advancing to the state
finals in and around Muncie on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Two defending state
champions are currently ranked atop their respective state coaches poll.
Class 2A top-ranked Muncie
Burris hopes to capture its 12th straight state championship and begins that
quest against Frankton in Sectional 41 at Lapel. Marquette Catholic, the
four-time defending champ in Class A, will start up against Westville in
Sectional 50 at Triton.
Other current No. 1 teams
include Indianapolis Cathedral in Class 4A and Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger in 3A.
Cathedral drew the bye into the semifinal round and will face the North
Central-Lawrence Central winner in Sectional 10 at Indianapolis Broad Ripple
while Bishop Dwenger will face home-standing Heritage in the first round of
Sectional 23.
Other defending state
champions hoping to advance back to Muncie include Bellmont in 3A and New
Castle in 4A. No. 4 Bellmont drew Fort Wayne Elmhurst in Sectional 22 at
Norwell while No. 7 New Castle takes on Connersville in the opening match of
Sectional 8 at Muncie Central.
Also of interest is
Jasper’s active sectional winning streak. The Wildcats have won a
sectional title 19 straight years (1989) and will look to tie the state record
of 20 set by Evansville Mater Dei from 1978-97. Currently ranked No. 10 in 3A,
Jasper will meet Pike Central in the bye match of Sectional 31 at Heritage
Hills.
