VOLLEYBALL STATE FINALS IN MUNCIE AREA ON SATURDAY

Nine of last year’s state finals participants, including five that played in their respective championship matches, have journeyed back for this Saturday’s 37th Annual IHSAA Volleyball State Finals in the Muncie area.

For the second year, the volleyball state finals will be played in Delaware County with Ball State University’s Worthen Arena serving as the anchor site for four state championship matches that afternoon and evening.

Four different sites will be used for the morning semifinals which begin at 9 am ET / 8 am CT with the winners at each site converging on Worthen Arena for their respective state championship match. Yorktown High School will host two semifinal matches in Class 4A; Muncie Central will host the 3A matches, Delta the 2A contests and Worthen Arena will be the site for the Class A semifinalists. The Class A state title match begins at 2:30 pm ET, with the 2A, 3A and 4A matches scheduled to begin no earlier than 4:15 pm, 6 pm and 8:10 pm, respectively. The 4A state championship match will be broadcast live to a state-wide audience on the Indiana Cable Network (affiliates to be announced later this week on the IHSAA website) and all four title matches will be webcast globally in live video and audio on www.ihsaasports.org.

Muncie Burris, the 11-time defending Class 2A state champion, headlines the list of 16 teams along with four-time defending Class A champ Marquette Catholic. Those two join three runner-up teams from last year – Elkhart Memorial (4A), Mishawaka Marian (3A) and Brownstown Central (2A) who are back trying to take that final step.

Also returning from last year’s field are Brebeuf Jesuit (3A), Fairfield (2A), Floyd Central (4A) and Lafayette Central Catholic (A). Indianapolis Lutheran (A) is the lone team making its initial appearance in the volleyball state finals.

The Class 2A semifinal between Burris and Fairfield is the only rematch from last year’s early round when the Owls took a 3-1 decision to advance to the final match.

Rosters, statistics and season results on all 16 teams are available here: 4A | 3A | 2A | A.

FRANKLIN’S DAN MORGAN NAMED VOLLEYBALL’S TOP OFFICIAL

Dan Morgan is the recipient of the 2008 Interscholastic Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the sport of volleyball.

Morgan will be honored during Saturday’s state finals.  A licensed official for 20 years, he has officiated 11 sectionals, four regionals, and one state final.

Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in 11 sports.

The Franklin resident was nominated for this award by his peers representing the Indiana Officials Association, one of 26 organizations located throughout Indiana made up of men and women who give up their personal time to assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile and healthy activities for the student-athletes of our state. This honor comes as a result of his selection by a committee of representatives from those 26 associations. Statewide, there are more than 8,000 licensed IHSAA officials in 11 sports.

A member of the Indiana Officials Association, Morgan is also licensed in football and basketball.  He has worked as a volleyball clinician for two years, and basketball clinician for eight.  He has been a rules interpreter for basketball since 2004.  Morgan has served the Indiana Officials Association as volleyball chairman for eleven years, and also has acted at various times as president, vice-president, and recording secretary of the Mid-Hoosier Officials Association.

Morgan is a 1986 graduate of Shelbyville High School.  He earned his bachelor’s degrees in Political Science, History, and Spanish from Franklin College

Professionally, he is the Regional Director for Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation.  He has been married to his wife Natalie for seven years, and they have two children, Heather Hughes and Cameron.
