NINE UNBEATEN FOOTBALL TEAMS MARCH INTO REGIONALS

Nine undefeated teams remain and two games feature a battle of those unbeaten as the 36th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament moves along to the regional championship round this weekend.

Nineteen games will be played Friday evening with one – Columbus East (12-0) at Jasper (11-1) – scheduled for Saturday night. The 20 winning teams will advance to semi-state contests the following weekend.

In Class 4A, No. 3 Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (12-0) travels to No. 6 Delta (12-0) and in Class A, fifth-ranked Linton-Stockton (12-0) heads to third-ranked Rockville (12-0). Both games are scheduled for Friday at 7 pm ET.

Should Bishop Dwenger emerge victorious, it would mark the Saints’ 15th regional championship and tie them with Hobart for the most in state history.

In Class A, second-ranked and three-time defending state champion Sheridan (11-1) will be playing for its 22nd consecutive tournament victory at No. 10 Pioneer (10-2). Already owning the longest active tournament win streak in the state, a Sheridan victory would tie them with Penn (1995-98) and Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (2001-04) for third place on the state’s all-time list.

Another big matchup occurs in Class 3A where two-time defending champion and top-ranked Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (10-1) plays host to third-ranked North Montgomery (12-0). Bishop Chatard has won 14 straight state tournament games dating back to 2006 and will be attempting to nail down its eighth consecutive regional crown which would tie Ben Davis (1995-2002) for the longest streak in state history. North Montgomery will be trying for its first regional title since it won back-to-back 2A state championships in 1995 and 1996.

Bellmont is the lone team in the field of 40 to have won its first sectional crown last weekend. The No. 6 Braves (11-1) will host Yorktown (10-2) in Class 3A and both teams are among four others – Madison-Grant and Rensselaer Central in Class 2A and Lapel and Triton in Class A – looking for their first regional championship.

Scores from each game will be posted to the IHSAA.org this weekend along with semi-state matchups.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE APPROVES WINTER SPORT TOURNAMENT PLANS

General formats, sites and preliminary plans for each of the 2008-09 winter state tournaments were presented and approved by the IHSAA Executive Committee last Friday at its November meeting.

The most significant moves are a return of one of the boys basketball regionals to Butler University’s Hinkle Fieldhouse after a one-year hiatus due to scheduling conflicts as well as alterations to the wrestling tournaments.

Effective with this year’s tournament, the fourth place wrestler in each weight class at each individual regional will advance to the individual semi-state creating a 16-person bracket in each weight class at the semi-state.

Also approved was the elimination of the team semi-states. The eight state finalist teams will now be determined through a four-team format at eight regional sites and made up only of teams that win their respective sectional. Sectional runner-up teams will not advance to the team tournament.

Also approved was an extension of the Association’s contract for The Legends of Indiana Golf Course to serve as host of the boys and girls golf state finals through 2013-14.

Minutes of the November 7 meeting of the Executive Committee are available here.

Lawrence North is among the four boys teams while South Bend Washington is one of the four girls teams invited.
