IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2/13/24)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

How many times have you read or heard about the word tradition?  One school has a rich tradition in football, another may have it in wrestling, baseball or softball.  Regardless of the sport, ever wonder how the tradition started and how it continues?

Sure tradition is almost always associated with winning, but what if you are involved with a sport at your school that doesn't have that tradition?  How can you change it?

It won't happen overnight, but you can build a tradition over a three to four year time period.  How?  Those involved must put winning over individual accomplishments.  It is not always easy to do, but it is necessary to build a program that consistently wins.

One must improve their abilities and skills, while encouraging other teammates to do the same.  Accountability to each other is important if everyone shares the same goal.  The result will be team unity and trust.

Tradition is built on the back of winning more than you have in the past.  It doesn't mean you will go undefeated, but it does mean you will show improvement year after year!
