Park Tudor Rides Big Second Half to Title

Park Tudor’s girls made it a sweep for the school by winning the Class 1A state championship with a 3-0 triumph over Fort Wayne Canterbury.

The Panther girls matched their boys counterparts, who claimed their 1A title with a 9-0 win over Greenwood Christian Academy on Friday. Park Tudor joined Noblesville, whose boys and girls teams also captured state titles on Saturday. Evansville Memorial, in 2008 and 2017, is the only other school in IHSAA history to pull off the boys and girls double.

Coach John Simmonds’s club slogged through a scoreless first half, then dented the scoreboard in the 55th minute on a goal by senior Katie Hur. She picked up a pass from Dejanae Butler and booted it in from 20 yards out. The Panthers (who came in top-ranked and finished at 21-1-1) picked up an insurance goal from freshman LIzzie Miller in the 71st minute as she also tallied on a shot from long range. Senior Gretchen Farley added the final goal in the 76th minute on an assist from Neela Gussick. Goalkeeper Lucy Furqueron recorded the shutout, her 18th of the season.

The win returns Park Tudor to the top of the heap in Class 1-A after Simmonds led the squad to a title in 2019. The Panthers were also runner-up in 2020.

Canterbury, led by first-year coach Chelsea Dourson, finished 12-9-2.
