Brebeuf Boys Secure Back-to Back State Titles
Junior Mateo Soria’s goal in the first overtime proved to be the game-winner in Brebeuf’s 2-1 win over Mishawaka Marian in a hard-fought, Class 2A state championship match.
Soria planted himself at the top of the box, straight out from the Marian goal and took a pass from teammate Teddy Potts and fired in a shot in the 86th minute.
The victory gives the third-ranked Braves their second-straight state title in their third appearance under coach Carlos Zaveleta.
After a scoreless first half, fourth-ranked Marian broke on top in the 49th minute on a header by high-scoring senior Jaxson Hundt. Freshman Victor Aguilar picked up the assist.
Brebeuf (17-4-1) tied the contest as junior Ben Haneline connected in the 61st minute just seconds after Marian had a golden opportunity to take a two-goal lead. Stefan Boes picked up the assist.
Coach Ben Householter's Knights came in on a 10-game winning streak and finished 18-2-2. Marian was seeking its third state title after winning in 2015 and 2016.
