IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (5-4-2020)
"Promoting education based athletics in Indiana"
College recruiting is a year round process. Even though there are no spring sports and summer AAU and club sports are in jeopardy, recruiters will still find a way to evaluate talent and search their needs for the seasons ahead.
How would a college recruiter look at you? How are your grades? Do you have the talent to play at the next level? What would your teachers and coaches say about your character and work ethic? What kind of a grade would your teammates give you? Have you ever made a bad choice that was made public or had a run-in with law enforcement?
Like it or not, your are graded on the accumulation of all the above. However, when a student-athlete makes a bad choice or decision along the way, the recruiter may look in a new direction and focus on someone else.
I recently read a quote of a parent of a troubled athlete who was not being recruited. " A kid may have made some bad choices, but they grow up. They (college recruiters) were so worried about his past they couldn't see what was ahead." Her son had athletic ability but no one came calling because of a troubled past. In most cases, colleges won't wait for you to grow up.
What you do yesterday, today, and tomorrow does matter. Don't be left off the radar because of bad judgement or a foolish mistake!
