Record Number of Teams Make Up Girls Basketball Tourney
The brackets for the 37th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance were filled this evening with a record number of teams.

A total of 398 schools, one more than the high mark set the last three years, and 5,359 student-athletes are set to participate in the tourney which begins in eight days.

Sectional games are scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 6, and run through Saturday, Feb. 11, with the regional round slated for Feb. 18 and semi-states on Feb. 25. The four state championship games that make up the state finals will be played at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute for the first time on Saturday, March 3. Sectional schedules will be announced by the host schools this week.

Hamilton Southeastern, the top-ranked team in the Class 4A poll from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association as well as the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association will be tested right off the bat by No. 8 North Central of Indianapolis. That game will take place as part of Sectional 8 at Carmel.

In Class 3A, No. 1 Norwell drew a bye in Sectional 23 at Mississinewa and will face the Eastbrook-Heritage winner in the semifinals.

Class 2A No. 1 Evansville Mater Dei takes on South Spencer in Sectional 48 at Forest Park with a potential meeting with No. 7 Southridge in the next round.

Fort Wayne Canterbury, the top team in Class A and state champion three of the last four years, faces Elkhart Christian in Sectional 52 at Lakewood Park Christian.

Among the defending state champions, Class 2A’s second-ranked Fort Wayne Bishop Luers picked up a bye in Sectional 36 at Adams Central. The Knights will await the Eastside-Bluffton winner.

Vincennes Rivet, last year’s Class A winner and ranked No. 4 this week, takes on Shoals in Sectional 63 at Barr-Reeve. With a victory, Rivet would meet the No. 2 ranked hosts in the semifinals.

Class 4A defending champ Jeffersonville drew Bedford North Lawrence in Sectional 15 at Seymour and 3A winner Evansville Memorial drew a bye in Sectional 32 at Boonville and will wait for the Evansville Bosse-Boonville victor.

Only one school is new to the girls state tournament this year as 21st Century Charter – Gary will make its debut in Class A, Sectional 49 at Washington Township. The Cougars will play in the opening game against Morgan Township.

Northeast Dubois (Class A) continues to lead the state with nine consecutive sectional championships while Elkhart Memorial and Fort Wayne Canterbury follow with eight straight.

About the Draw
To conduct the random drawing for the girls basketball state tournament, the IHSAA places ping-pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a lottery-style air mix machine. A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in game one with the second ball representing the home team in game one. The third ball to come out is the visitor in game two and the fourth ball the home team in game two. That same method is followed through all 64 sectionals and 16 regionals.
