BATESVILLE’S ELLIE TIDMAN LOOKING FOR FOURTH HIGH JUMP CROWN
The state’s best in high school track and field converge in Bloomington this weekend as the IHSAA conducts the 37th annual girls state finals on Friday and the 107th boys state finals on Saturday. Both meets will be contested at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University with field events beginning at 3 pm ET and running events at 4:15 pm ET.
The girls meet features seven defending state champions in various events as well as another from 2008 while the boys meet will be wide open for first-time winners as only one individual champion returns from a year ago.
Headlining the girls state finals is Batesville senior Ellie Tidman who will be competing for her fourth consecutive state championship in the high jump. Tidman is seeded third in the event at 5-6 and would become the first individual to win the event all four years and just the fourth girl to win any event four times. Seeded ahead of her is Camille Hayes of Lawrence Central at 5-10 and Rebecca Lomax of Southport at 5-7.
Also returning to defend her title from a year ago is Ellie McCardwell of Pendleton Heights in the pole vault. She’ll be challenged by 2008 winner Margo Tucker of Lawrence Central who finished second in last year’s state meet. Tucker cleared 13-1 while McCardwell went 12-1 to finish 1-2 in the Ben Davis regional last Tuesday.
Tori Bliss of Portage in the shot put, Shanice Gholson of Jeffersonville in the 100 meters, Kate DeSimone of Fort Wayne Canterbury in the 1600 meters, Logan Hayes of Warren Central in the 400 meters and Abby Farley of Park Tudor in the 800 meters are the other returning state champions from 2009.
On Saturday, North Central sophomore Futsum Zeinasellassie is the only returning champion and is the favorite to repeat in the 3200 meters holding the top time of 9:17.58. He also won the state cross country title last October in Terre Haute.
The third-ranked Ben Davis boys, which beat out No. 2 Lawrence Central at the North Central regional last Friday, are the two-time defending team champions. The Giants would become the latest to win three straight titles and first since Lawrence North captured three straight in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Top-ranked Fort Wayne Snider handily won its regional last week as well.
Third-ranked Lawrence North is the defending girls champion after securing its first state crown in the final event a year ago. The Wildcats finished second to No. 2 Lawrence Central in last week’s regional at Ben Davis. No. 1 Warren Central, which won the state championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008 won the Shelbyville regional.

Programs and Results – Complimentary copies of the state finals program which include heat sheets for each boys and girls event will be available to members of the media upon claiming your media credential. If you need additional copies, please see Chris Kaufman or Toni Polizzi in the press box. Official results will be distributed in the media area as soon as possible after the conclusion of each event. Results also will be posted to the IHSAA website throughout the course of both meets.
Work Area – News media will be able to work from a covered (though not enclosed) seating area just to the north of the press box along the front straightaway. Ample seating and free wireless internet access will be available through guest accounts provided by Indiana University. Please see Chris Kaufman or Toni Polizzi in the press box for a guest account. LAFAYETTE OFFICIAL TO RECEIVE TOP AWARD THIS WEEKEND
Mark Beck of Lafayette is the recipient of the 2010 Interscholastic Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the sport of Track and Field and will be honored in a special ceremony at this weekend’s state finals meet.
Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of 11 sports during the school year.
Beck has been a track and field official for 34 years. During his career, he has worked every level of the state tournament, including 31 sectionals, 28 regionals and 12 state finals. He last officiated the state finals in 2003.
Beck was selected for this honor by a committee representing the officials associations. In Indiana there are 26 associations made up of men and women who give up much of their personal time to assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile, and healthy activities for the student-athletes in our state. Statewide, there are more than 8,000 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports.
Beck has served as local association clinician for the Western Indiana Officials Association. During his tenure, he has helped start a local scholarship through the WIOA for deserving local athletes, with an emphasis on sportsmanship and need.
Beck has served as the local association vice president from 1978-79 and as president from 1991-92. He graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1967, earned a degree from Purdue University in 1992 and currently works in the Boilermakers’ athletic department. Beck is also a certified official in football and has officiated five state championships. He and his wife Carol have been married for 35 years and have three children, Scott, Shelley and Marcie.
EIGHT TEAMS CHASE GIRLS TENNIS CROWN
Five top 10 teams, including the defending state champion, are among the eight that have advanced to the state finals of the 36th Annual IHSAA Girls Tennis Team Tournament which begins Friday.
Like the boys state finals last fall, eight girls teams now will play in a dual format to determine the new state champion. Four quarterfinal matches will be played Friday at 3 pm ET with the winners returning on Saturday at 10 am ET for a pair of semifinals and the championship match at 2 pm ET. The consolation match from prior years has been eliminated. The new format marks the first significant change to the state tournament since 1982 when four teams began advancing to the state finals.
In the quarterfinals at Park Tudor on Friday, defending state champion and No. 2 Carmel (18-1) will take on No. 10 Columbus North (20-2) in one match while a pair of unbeatens with face off in the other as No. 5 Terre Haute South (18-0) meets No. 6 Highland (24-0).
On the other side of the bracket at Carmel, No. 21 Zionsville (15-5) meets No. 12 South Bend St. Joseph’s (18-3) in one quarterfinal with No. 8 Center Grove (17-3) playing unranked Yorktown (13-2) in the other.
Carmel and Terre Haute South are each making their eighth trip to the state finals, South Bend St. Joseph’s and Zionsville their fifth appearance and Columbus North its third overall and first since 1981. Center Grove, Highland and Yorktown are each making their initial visits to state.
Also taking place this weekend at four sites around the state are the individual regionals for singles and doubles players. Pairings for those matches are listed below.

BOYS GOLF SECTIONALS BEGIN FRIDAY
Seventeen of the 28 sectionals begin Friday (June 4) as the 74th Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Tournament begins. Two sectionals, hosted by Vincennes Lincoln and Warsaw and played at The Golf Club of Old Vincennes and Stonehenge, respectively, are scheduled for Saturday with the remainder slated for Monday. Qualifying individuals and teams will advance to one of seven regionals set for June 10-11.
Floyd Central, which will participate at Covered Bridge on Monday, will be trying for its eighth consecutive sectional title, the longest active streak in the state. Another championship would be the Highlanders 21st overall in the sport which would tie them for sixth in state history. Avon, which competes at the Martinsville Golf Club, and Lake Central, hosting at Palmira, will each be hunting for a fifth straight championship.
Results from each site will be added to the IHSAA website as they become available from the host school.

SEVERAL HOOSIER NATIVES PLAYING IN NCAA DIV. I BASEBALL TOURNEY
Thirteen individuals who played their high school baseball in Indiana dot the rosters of the 64 teams involved in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. That tournament begins at 16 sites around the country on Friday.
There were no Indiana high school softball connections on any of the eight teams remaining in the Women’s College World Series. That tournament begins Thursday in Oklahoma City.

David Heffern has been named girls varsity basketball coach at Park Tudor School for the 2010-2011 season. Best known as head coach of the Park Tudor boys and girls tennis teams that have captured six boys and six girls state championships, Heffern also has experience as an award-winning basketball coach. Heffern was the girls basketball coach at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, CA, from 1983-1986, where he led his team to the 1983 3A State Championship. That year he also was named the California Interscholastic Federation 3A "Coach of the Year" in Girls Basketball. Heffern served as boys assistant basketball coach at Corona Del Mar from 1987-1989.
Linton-Stockton, a Class A school in Greene County, had four different teams win a sectional championship this school year. The Miners won titles in football, girls basketball, softball and baseball.
Scottsburg announced that Brian Perry has been named as the school’s new athletic director. Perry previously served the school district as assistant principal at Scottsburg Elementary School.
On May 19, Lakeland softball coach Sherry Severson recorded her 300th win. She has been the only softball coach Lakeland has had in the program’s 23 years.
Westville’s softball team celebrated the school’s very first sectional title of any kind with a 7-0 victory over host Triton in last Wednesday’s Sectional 51 championship game.
