Class 2A State Finals

WESTVIEW PULLS AWAY TO WIN CLASS 2A CROWN

First-time state finalist Westview scored 26 fourth quarter points to pull away from Paoli for a 71-52 win in the IHSAA Class 2A championship game on Saturday at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

The game was tied at 22-22 with 1:57 left before halftime, but the Warriors outscored the Rams 9-2 in the remaining stretch to take a 31-24 halftime lead and extended it throughout the second half to claim the school's first championship in any team sport. Westview received balanced scoring up and down its roster with 6-3 junior center Jeff Nelson the only Warrior in double figures with a game-high 21 points. He also took game honors with 10 rebounds.

Dusty Cole scored 11 points and Tristan Vance 10 to lead Paoli in scoring.

Two key advantages in the game for Westview included getting to the free throw line and fast-break execution. The Warriors converted 13 of 18 of their free throw attempts, while Paoli made just one of four from the line. Westview also repeatedly beat the Rams for quick points scoring 18 fast-break points.

Fifth-ranked Westview, coached by Troy Neely, finished its championship season at 23-3, while unranked Paoli, also on its first journey to the big stage, completed its year at 22-5. Entering the state finals, Paoli had knocked off three consecutive ranked opponents.

PAOLI'S LUKE KIMMEL WINS CLASS 2A TRESTER AWARD

Luke Kimmel of Paoli High School was selected by the Executive Committee of the Indiana High School Athletic Association as the recipient of the Arthur L. Trester Award for Class 2A Boys Basketball.

The award, named in honor of the IHSAA's first commissioner, is awarded to one senior boy in each classification at the state finals who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability during the four years of high school.

Kimmel, the 6-1 forward for the state runner-up Rams, helped Paoli to its first-ever appearance in an IHSAA state finals event. He has been a four-year starter on the varsity basketball team and has earned 12 letters during his high school career. Besides basketball, he has participated in football, tennis and track and field.

Kimmel ranks atop his senior class of 95 students, currently serves as president of the National Honor Society and also directs the Paoli High School television studio to name just a couple of his school activities.

He plans to study mathematics or physics at a college yet to be decided upon.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Paoli High School in the name of Kimmel.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Westview Coach Troy Neely

"Just like a lot of our games we got off to a big lead, but they came back at us, which is also like a lot of our games. (Randy) Miller hit a big three right before half. The third quarter we got a spurt and the fourth quarter was incredible. With four minutes to go, I was actually able to relax. At the end, seven or eight times we were able to get it in to Nelson.

"The guys took it upon themselves to get it into Jeff (Nelson).

Speaking on Scott Hostetler: "Scott is the soul of our team. They are two key players, but the other starters and the other people off of the bench also contributed.

"Paoli gave us a challenge. We got a goo run to start the game, but they always kept coming back at us.

Scott Hostetler

"This was always a dream of mine (winning the state championship). I really can't explain it, but I'm glad for the whole team."

Paoli Coach Michael Brown

"We wanted to make other people score besides (Derek Yoder, Scott Hostetler). They each only got nine, but (Jeff Nelson) did a tremendous job getting 21 points 10 rebounds.

"They beat us where they had to. This was the second time all year we were out rebounded. We don't give games away and we make them take it from us and they did.

"We just ran out of steam trying to make runs trying to get back into the ballgame. No matter what the score is, we are going to play hard. Any time we made a run, they made one back. Their depth was a factor.

"When you set a high goal, you run the risk of being really disappointed. Our goal was to win state.

"We needed to get easy baskets off of our press and we didn't get any.

"This group has accomplished more than any other group at Paoli. The groups that came before opened the door for this group.

"Do we believe in class basketball? Last year we played at Hinkle and this year we played in the dome, but we've been to the semi-state in one-class ball also.

Paoli's Luke Kimmel

"Its been a while since we've had to handle a loss."

(Speaking on winning the mental attitude award)

"The award goes to the winner on one of the two teams and I didn't get here by myself."
