Top-ranked and defending state champion Carmel withstood a strong challenge from second-ranked North Central of Indianapolis at the Carmel Sectional to win its 17^th consecutive sectional championship. The Greyhounds totaled 396 points with six event champions, while North Central crowned five winners on its way to 334 points.

Columbus North and Hamilton Southeastern compiled the state’s highest winning totals with 408 points each at sectionals they hosted. It was a state-best 18^th consecutive sectional title for No. 3-ranked Columbus North. Elsewhere, Chesterton and Mount Vernon won sectional titles with 391 points and Munster totaled 390.

Among the individuals advancing to the state finals, Feb. 9-10 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, was four-time state champion Jenni Anderson of Chesterton. Anderson, a senior, goes for her third straight titles in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

The other 2000 individual state champions qualifying for the 2001 state meet were sophomores Leah Retrum of Columbus North in the 500 freestyle and Katherine Robinson of South Dearborn in the 100 freestyle.
