Park Tudor's Katie Martzolf Makes History;

Wins Fourth Consecutive State Singles Championship

Park Tudor senior Katie Martzolf completed an outstanding high school career by winning her record fourth consecutive state championship -- a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Castle senior Lindsay Martin -- on Saturday in the 20^th Annual IHSAA Singles State Finals at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

With the victory, Martzolf became just the second player to capture four state titles joining Castle's Lenae Renschler who won four straight from 1983-86.

Just as incredible was the fact that Martzolf went unbeaten during her four years at Park Tudor High School finishing 99-0 and was a part of two state championship teams in 1998 and 2000. Besides her 23-0 finish this season, she finished 29-0 as a junior in 2000; 27-0 as a sophomore in 1999 and; 20-0 as a freshman in 1998. She was coached by Dave Heffern.

She defeated Julie Beekman of Marion for the state championship in her first two years -- 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) in 1998 and 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in 1999; and bested Ashlee Davis of Anderson Highland, 6-4, 6-2, in 2000.

Martzolf's victory also gave Park Tudor a sweep of the state singles titles for the 2000-01 school year as classmate Brandon Gill won the boys crown last fall.

For Martin, it was her first trip to the championship match in four appearances in the state finals. She finished 28-1 this season. Martin had advanced to the quarterfinal round during her freshman and sophomore years and was eliminated by Martzolf in last year's semifinals. Martin went 58-3 over the last two years, with all three losses coming in the state finals, two of them to Martzolf.

Martzolf had advanced to the title round with a 6-0, 6-1 semifinal victory over senior Flynne Weingarten of South Bend Clay, while Martin defeated Lawrence Central sophomore Laura Trimble, 6-3, 6-3 in the other match. Trimble (21-6) defeated Weingarten (27-2), 6-3, 6-2, in the consolation match.
