STATE FINALS SUMMARY

It was clear from the outset that the Carmel girls’ tennis team was going to be a force to be dealt with in the girls team tennis state finals contested Saturday, June 14, 2003 at North Central (Indpls.) High School…and they did not disappoint their fans on a beautifully sunny day.

 

In the morning session, the lady Greyhounds lost only a total of ten games in their five matches, defeating Penn 5-0.  They came back equally as strong in the championship matchup with Jasper, knocking off the Wildcats 5-0, dropping only eight games as they captured their third state crown.  Carmel finished the season 19-0.  Jasper concluded their efforts at 18-1.

 

For Carmel, Sophie Grabinski (10), number-one singles, finished the campaign at 22-0.  Sister Marie (11), number-two singles, closed out at 21-0.  Number-three singles representative, Melissa Neukam (12), was 19-1 on the year.  In doubles, the number-one tandem of Elizabeth Steele (11) and Jessica Thompson (12) were 23-0 this season and the number-two unit of Nicola Evans (12) and Allison Thompson (11) finished at 19-1.

 

Zionsville (20-2) defeated Penn (20-3), 5-0, in the consolation match.

 

LAUREN WOODWARD OF PENN WINS MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD

Lauren Woodward of Penn High School was named winner of the 2003 Girls Tennis Mental Attitude

Award.  At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee presents an award for mental attitude to an outstanding senior participant.  The recipient of this award, who was nominated by her principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in tennis.

 

Lauren was a member of the Penn state finals team in 2002 and 2003.  Ranking 49th in her class of 640, this year she was named to the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association Academic All-State Team and selected  Northern Indiana Conference All-Conference Honorable Mention for the second consecutive time.

 

She has been awarded an Academic Honors Diploma, High Honors Award, President’s Education Award, Penn Fine Arts Division Senior Band Award and has been named Fischoff National Chamber Music Association Artist of the Month in October, 2002.

 

Lauren has received the Howard Hanson and George Eastman Scholarships to attend the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York to obtain a degree in Music Education.

 

Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a check for $1,000.00 to Penn High School in the name of Lauren Woodward.
