Unbeaten Singles Stalwarts lead Park Tudor to IHSAA Championship

Park Tudor sophomore Megan Martzolf (23-0) and junior MaryBeth Winningham (22-0) completed undefeated singles campaigns to lead coach Dave Heffern’s 18-2 squad to the school’s third state championship with a 3-2 triumph over Evansville Memorial (18-2) in the 31st Annual IHSAA Girls Tennis State Finals at North Central High School in Indianapolis on Saturday.

Martzolf at #1 and Winningham at #2 gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the final, but Park Tudor freshmen Elizabeth Emhardt and Heather Rogers provided the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #2 doubles over Evansville Memorial’s Jessica Bello and Reva Mehdiratta.

Martzolf will advance to next weekend’s 24th Annual IHSAA Girls Tennis Singles Finals because of her undefeated record at #1 singles in the tournament.  She finished third individually as a freshman last year.

Culver Academies (19-2) swept the singles to edge Zionsville (21-3) in the consolation match, 3-2.

Zionsville’s Campbell Named Mental Attitude Award Winner

Zionsville senior number two singles player Mary Elizabeth Campbell received the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award following Saturday’s matches.  The recipient of this award must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in tennis.  Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Zionsville High School in Campbell’s name.

Campbell helped Zionsville to its third State Finals appearance in her four-year career, posting a 21-3 record this season.

“Mary Elizabeth is a perceptive student who takes her studies seriously and excels in all facets of high school,” says Zionsville principal Jim Eggers.  “Her ability to lead and set an example for her peers is unprecedented.  She exemplifies the spirit and vitality in the classroom and community of many of our youth today.”

Campbell graduated 13th in her senior class of 274.  She will pursue a double major in biology and history while continuing her tennis career at St. Mary’s College.
