PARK TUDOR CAPTURES THIRD IN A ROW

In a rematch of last year, Park Tudor captured its third consecutive state championship with a 4-1 victory over Munster in the final match of the 33rd Annual IHSAA Girls Tennis State Tournament at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

The victory marked Park Tudor’s fifth state title in girls tennis, all under the guidance of coach Dave Heffern. The Panthers also won it all in 1998 and 2000. It was just the second rematch in the history of the tournament after Evansville Memorial bettered Homestead in 1995 and 1996.

Park Tudor (19-0) took victories and No. 1 and 3 singles and both doubles matches.

Sarah McPhail won twice at No. 3 singles today to finish the 2007 campaign undefeated at 23-0. She beat Munster freshman Christina Lee, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the final. Senior Megan Martzolf, the 2005 state singles champ, also won twice including her 6-1, 6-2 win over Maureen Modesto. Munster’s lone point came from sophomore Mary Hill who won twice on the day at No. 2 singles and finished perfect at 28-0.

It was Munster’s (18-1) fourth trip to the state championship match but each time the Mustangs have been turned away. Munster was coached by Bob Modesto. Park Tudor, meanwhile, is perfect in the last match at 5-0.

Park Tudor handed Homestead (20-3) its second defeat of the season in the semifinals, 4-1. Munster bounced Jasper (19-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten in the other semi, 4-1. Jasper defeated Homestead in the consolation match, 3-2.
