PARK TUDOR FRESHMEN SWEEP

STATE SINGLES AND DOUBLES TITLES

Just a week after winning the state team championship, Park Tudor players swept the singles and doubles titles at the IHSAA Girls Tennis State Finals on Saturday at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

Freshman Katie Martzolf completed a perfect 20-0 season by defeating Marion junior Julie Beekman in a thrilling 17th annual singles final, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4). It was the first championship singles match to go three sets since 1988. Beekman held a 6-5 lead in the third set, before Martzolf rallied to force the tiebreaker. It was the first loss of the year for Beekman, who finished 28-1 and as the state runner-up for the second straight year.

Martzolf, who helped Park Tudor to its first team title last Saturday, advanced to the championship match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Anderson senior Janae Cummings during the morning session. Beekman earned her spot in the final with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Fairfield senior Sarah Huber.

Freshmen teammates Brookley Crews and Brooke Sagalowsky finished an unbeaten 18-0 season of their own with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over senior Annie Knish and sophomore Jeannie Knish of Munster for the 8th annual doubles championship. Crews and Sagalowsky moved into the final after beating sophomore Elizabeth Hedde and freshman Brittany Perkins of Vincennes Lincoln, 6-3, 6-4, in Saturday morning's semifinals. The Knish sisters, who finished 21-2, moved into the championship match following a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Merrillville juniors Danielle Moore and Dametra Stath. Annie Knish teamed with Kavita Chowdary to win the 1996 state doubles championship.

Cummings, a three-time state finalist, finished third for the second straight year with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Huber in the singles consolation match. Hedde and Perkins defeated Moore and Stath, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the doubles consolation match.
